Don Everly, 1937-2021

There are no bad Everly Brothers records. Some are good, but most are great. In 1994, Rhino Records released a fantastic boxed set called "Heartaches & Harmonies," and those two words perfectly describe the sound of Phil & Don Everly.

If "Bye Bye Love" and "Wake Up Little Susie" is where you stop, it's time to go deep with one of the most wonderful catalogues in all of music.

Begin by listening to "It's Everly Time" from 1960, "Two Yanks In England" from 1966, "Roots" from 1968, "Stories We Could Tell" from 1972," and "EB 84" from 1984. I promise you'll want to go another round.

R.I.P., Don.

Wow, great song. Ry Cooder on slide guitar I see and tons of other great musicians listed. Gonna give this one a listen. Funny that there's a debate going on over at Simel's blog PowerPop about the slide player on a posted song.

RIP to one of the originals. The harmonies of the Every Brothers influenced everyone going forward.

Your "Wings Of A Nightingale" in the weekend mix was well-timed. Great act! Thanks for sharing. (And I should have known you'd have the info before the NYT!)

There's a reason sib harmonies make up some of my favorite artists (Delmore Brothers, Blue Sky Boys) and songs (Color Of A Cloudy Day by Shelby and Allison). The Everlys were unearthly when they clicked.

Several Everly Bros 45s given to me way back when were part of the start of my musical hobby/obsession/journey ever since. RIP indeed.

Sorry to hear this. To this day, my favorite big concert (as opposed to smaller shows which is a diff category) of all time was seeing Simon & Garfunkel in Atlanta in 2003 with the Everlys playing a short and powerful set in the MIDDLE (instead of opening).

They influenced every harmony singer after them. Legendary.

I got to see the Everly's in concert at the Greek Theater in the 80's. I was with My wife and in-laws and we were one of the first ones in. We walked our way towards the back and found our seats. 15 minutes later an usher came and talked to us, telling us they "had a cancellation in the fourth row. We don't like to have empty seats up front, would you like to move to those seats?"

We did. We moved to the 4th row center, two rows in front of Mike Campbell, Tom Petty and their guests. The concert was great of course. The Everly's were amazing.

One of my very first musical memories was as a very young child hearing "Cathy's Clown" playing on our old single speaker Victrola. My older sisters would play that song all day long. We never got tired of it. Still love it. Thank you for all of the great songs Phil and Don.

Sal I know we've spoken of our love for Don and Phil and tx to you I filled in some missing pieces of their catalogue over the years. it still feels like a gut punch when they go. I knew he was a bit frail when I set my eyes on him in Cleveland a few years back when the Rock Hall did a whole Everly tribute. He appeared at the end of the show and joined in an encore of what else but Bye Bye Love. I feel like im out of words. Just want you to know your love for them was infectious and right on the same wavelength with mine. Perfect harmony and what could be better?? and as im typing this im also mute on Charlie; fuckin a enough with this dying stuff for a while.
