The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan and the Motown label are among those who have released music to extend European copyrights. "Use it or lose it," they say.
Motown has released an annual digital compilation since 2011, I believe. Much of what was left in the vaults should have been left in the vaults, but occasionally there is a real gem.
I stumbled across one of those gems this weekend.
From 1966, please enjoy Brenda Holloway and "Spellbound," apparently a Northern soul deep cut classic in the U.K., so much so, they released it as a vinyl single for the first time this year.
I can't get enough of this track and I'm hoping this one caught the ears of the Jaded Hearts Club, who have knocked a few Motown tracks out of the park with their aggressive, feel good covers. This has the JHC written all over it.

Oh Man ... :-)
Thanks Sal
A truly wonderful track.
That is outstanding.
Yep, a real good one by Brenda. But still no For Once In My Life by Jack Soo Lol!!
The Motown vaults had tons of great Brenda Holloway songs, many of which have come out on various compilations years later. Seems she never got the same push that they gave Diana Ross or some of Berry G's other favorites, which is a shame. Her version of Smokey's When I'm Gone (also done by Mary Wells) is one of my favorite Motown records.
Marc
Marc,
When I’m Gone is a killer. The arrangement feels like Smokey meets Bacharach.
what a great track!
It is insane how much lays hidden in Motown. On Spotify there is a play list called Lost Classics of Motown that will quench anyone's thirst.
Once you've heard her official releases, the 2017 compilation "Spellbound: Rare & Unreleased Motown Gems" has more where that came from. Great stuff and thanks for sending me back to her.
