Rolling In The Dough

One afternoon, walking along Chartres Street in the French Quarter, I stopped in a shoe store looking for something comfortable. There was a couple, locals no doubt, and the wife was holding up a pair of incredibly gaudy platform sandals, with what I remember being a transparent pink six inch heel. The shoes were ugly. She held them up to her husband and asked, "What do you think?" He asked, "How much?" She said, "$250!" He barked back, "What's in that heel, $240?!"

I still laugh when I think about it and often use that joke.

Adele has announced a Las Vegas residency. One report says ticket prices start at $85 and go as high as $650. But most reports, including some Tweets from Adele fans claim the starting price is much higher.

"One impassioned Adele fan agreed: "I hate Vegas residencies… it’s such a slap in the face to your fans, who cannot afford to fly out/get a hotel/other travel accommodations…ON TOP of the cost of tickets… @Adele ... I cannot wait for the era of residencies to die." At the time of writing, tickets for Friday and night concerts in January 2022 begin at $2,161. The ticket prices are staggered and eventually become as expensive as $9,444."

"Tickets begin at $2161?" It's Vegas, so they must give you $2000 in quarters when you arrive for the show!

I know, I know. Go easy on her.

Tickets for Joe Jackson at the Beacon went on sales last week. A pair of decent (not awesome) Orchestra tickets would have set me back $300. As much as I love Joe, I couldn't justify that expenditure. I noticed he's also playing a theater in Ithaca. A pair for that show would have cost 50% less. But that means travelling to Ithaca and frankly there are other places I'd rather spend money at a hotel at. Like Vegas!

Actually they give you $3000.00 in quarters.

Speaking of New Orleans, there was an AP article over the weekend about Allen Toussaint. A city council member in NO wants to rename the street that honors Robert E Lee for Allen Toussaint. He wants to honor the man who meant so much to the musical legacy of that city. I'd vote for that...

I saw Led Zeppelin in St. Louis in 1973 for $4 which is about $25 in 2021 dough.

I'd pay the $2200 to see Adele in Vegas if she promised to do a 30 minute "Dazed & Confused" complete with bow and theramin.

At some level I don't begrudge artists charging what they can get away with in these still-Covid times (and Vegas residencies have always been quite expensive anyway.) Adele gotta eat! (But not as much apparently!)

If you want to see the big name artists live -- and for Adele a limited engagement (only Friday and Saturday evenings, between January 21, 2022 and April 16, 2022) -- you gotta cough up the dough.

Go see Chuck Prophet for $20 -- you'll have just as much fun (if not more.)

And a lung, a kidney, a spleen and a few inches of intestine.

A tab of acid will get you that Adele 30-minute version of "Dazed and Confused", and all you'll sacrifice is your brain cells for a spell, instead of a bunch of dough and your lung, kidney, spleen and intestine.

£12 to see the Nightingales + Blue Orchids play a brilliant show a couple weeks back.
These "celebrity" b(r)ands can eat shit.

Tickets to see Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives on 1/29/22 at The Newton Theater were $54 which seemed like a lot, but Adele just put that into perspective.
