Club Nitty Gritty- Chuck Berry
I am working on a week of future posts dedicated to the 45. I pulled out about 30 singles to consider. This was one of them, if only for that filthy and funky groove.
The Oogum Boogum Song- Brenton Wood
A friend posted about this Brenton Wood album on Instagram, and so, of course, the ADD kicked in and I needed to hear this track.
Sometimes In Winter- Blood, Sweat & Tears
There aren't many songs I like less than those awful David Clayton-Thomas BST singles. "Lucretia MacEvil" makes me cringe, with "Spinning Wheel" and "Hi-De-Ho" running a close second and third. So when I received an email from my pal with this song attached, I almost trashed it without listening. Thankfully, I did not, as it is a lovely Steve Katz track found on the b-side of "And When I Die."
Those That We Love- Julie Driscoll
Mojo ran a piece recently about 1971 Nuggets. That year produced some of the greatest records of all time, but this article was about those lesser known gems. One of my favorites, Julie Driscoll's "1969" was on that list and so I gave it a spin and decided to share this track.
I Don't Mind- Buzzcocks
I picked up that 2 LP anthology of the Buzzcocks covering their United Artists years and played it loud. This is the one that stood out.
Justify My Love- Madonna
This was another consideration for the post on 45s. Yeah, this song took a lot of crap when it came out. First, a law suit from Prince protege Ingrid Chavez, who claims she wrote it. She won and settled. Then, Public Enemy, claiming the backing track was a direct rip of "Security Of The First World." It is, but not sure how that suit turned out, since PE most likely copped it from James Brown. Toss in Madonna's "Erotica" book, which was one step short of filming a trip to the Gyno, and now she starts moaning and whispering the verses--"I want to kiss you in Paris. I want to run naked in a rainstorm. I don't want to be your mother." Yeah, yeah. Settle down, Madge. My co-worker and I would substitute our own lyrics whenever this track played--"I want to play Monopoly and be the iron. I want pancakes, but those silver dollar ones. I want to unbutton my jeans so I can sit down comfortably." It was all in fun. But the truth is, this track is genius. And I mean that sincerely. It's record-making of the highest order, even if it falls short as a song.
Bring Me Sunshine- Willie Nelson
This one came to me from my old pal cmealha. I hadn't heard it before and man, did it put me a good mood. I hope it does the same for you.

Don't know why Oogum Boogum makes me smile but it does!
I had Oogum Boogum running through my head earlier today - completely unprompted by anything! I haven't heard it in a while, but I'm obviously going to rectify that right now (I have it on CD and MP3).

For us Brits of a certain age "Bring Me Sunshine" will always be linked as the theme music to the long running TV shows of UK entertainers Morecambe & Wise who were a fixture on 60s/70s telly. Hearing Mr Nelson's version was interesting but..... Anyway, thanks for doing up the zip. Cheers!
