Scrolling through Instagram, I stumbled upon a live cover of "I Got You Babe" posted by Lisa of The Bellrays. She introduced it as "I Got You Babe" via Etta James, and along with her husband Bob, proceeded to kick some ass with just a voice and electric guitar.
I looked at my copy of Etta James' "Tell Mama" and no "I Got You Babe." Apparently, it was a single only released in 1968, and appeared as a bonus track on various CDs. I realize I can't possibly know everything, but how the hell did this one get by me?
Damn.

Damn is right. Those Muscle Shoals cats are cookin'.
Sal, you posted this song on February 11, 2011. It was a Weekend Mix with the title "I Rest My Case." I was surprised to think I knew about a song you didn't know, but when I checked my music library, I realized I got it from you.
J. Loslo,
It's fair to say I probably have not listened to Etta's I Got You Babe since that day in 2011. It sounded fresh to me.
(I'm getting old!)
Etta was a great interpreter of songs. I love her versions of Tom Jans' "Loving Arms" and Mickey Newbury's "Are My Thoughts With You".
During the discussion on Burning Wood of covers that "own" the original, I thought about suggesting Etta's cover of "Take It To The Limit". The arrangement with the gospel chorus is transcendent.

I can't believe that Walmart using this in a current ad is getting this great version to the masses. I will take it any way I can get it.
Jonder,
Great cover, for sure. Abvout half of the "Deep In The Night" album is excellent. Love the Kiki Dee cover, too.
re: getting old - For a brief moment I thought it was the muscle aches cats. Oy Vey!!

didn't see this coming! I love it!
Haha. I don't know what's funnier -- the feeling we've all had as obsessive lovers of music/movies/books etc when something we absolutely SHOULD know about escapes our attention...or the fact that you actually HAD heard it before. Been there! Done that!
Tell Mama - Complete Muscle Shoals Sessions [Chess] (1967) CD reissue has this in the 10 Bonus Tracks (Not sure of the release date!?
So goo....I just listened to it all twice.......
Cheers
