Waterfront- Simple Minds
I love most of the "Sparkle In The Rain" album, but this track...the intro especially...is a monster!
Play it loud.

Can't Get Enough- Frank Lee Sprague
This cover is too cool to get lost on the side bar.

Spare Parts- Bruce Springsteen
As good a time as any...

Heathen Town- Elvis Costello
Just one of E.C.'s many high quality b-sides.

Popular Girl- Martin Newell
This ended up on one of the vinyl reissues of "Greatest Living Englishmen," but was then ultimately removed from the definitive reissue, so I am not sure if there is any Andy Partridge involvement. But it sure sounds like there is.

Cool It Down- Velvet Underground
Thought about this one as NYC swelters in a mini heatwave. Think Lou listened to "Clothes Line Saga" from The Basement Tapes right before writing this?

You Are The Circus- C & The Shells
My rediscovery of the week is this soul gem from the genius Jerry Williams, aka Swamp Dogg. You can find this one deep into the "Beg, Scream & Shout" boxed set from Rhino. Disc 4, I believe. Loved it so much, I had to buy the 45!

Simple Minds' "Waterfront" is indeed a monster song! Also, from the same album is a very good version of Lou Reed's "Street Hassle"

Thanks Jayessemm,
Should be good to go now.
I guess it was too cool for the zip, as well!

Agreed that Sparkle In the Rain is a great album from the opening Up On the Catwalk onwards (digging it out now for a spin). Rare to see a mention of Martin Newell, but as you featured the Psychedelic Furs on Friday and he's known as the Psychedelic Gardener, perhaps that's the connection and I can claim my prize? Cheers!

If unknown to you, please give a listen to the Sprague Brothers releases Let The Chicks Fall Where They May (great title!), Forever And A Day, and Best Of EssBee. Like the Spanic Boys, Deke Dickerson, and a few others with the skills, modern music with traditional rock sensibilities and no sense of novelty.

Yes, Sparkle In The Rain is - for me at least - an unexpectedly amazing LP. To me, Simple Minds is like Talk Talk: based on their big radio hits, one would never know how cool they were at one time. I mean, the song Talk Talk may be the worst song ever, next to We Built This City. But Spirit of Eden and Colour Of Spring and others? Perfect pieces of music.

Same with Simple Minds... they were on fire in the early days, before their big American hits.
