Steely Dan Covers Joni Mitchell

Recorded for the 2007 Joni Mitchell tribute record and then apparently shelved, here are Steely Dan and their version of Joni's "Blue" classic, "Carey."

I love that this exists even if there is something about it that makes me understand why it was shelved.

Let me know if you feel the same way.

Fagen's voice (maybe even his persona) is unable to "carry" that song. strange that they didn't pick something from Hejira, Hissing, Don Juan or Mingus

That was a fun listen, even if it can't compare to Joni's perfect original. Part of the beauty of the original is the dulcimer and the drone it adds underneath everything.

I agree entirely. An interesting failure.

I feel like I can't hear it.

I agree with Anon in regards to them not picking something a bit more adventurous. One of my fave Joni songs.

It's hard to say exactly what's wrong with this, but it is definitely wrong. Fagan shouldn't sing it. It doesn't work so great with the gender reversal. And the icy-cool Dan covering such a romantic song seems wrong on several levels. It surprises me that such a bad rendition was left off the tribute as those records are usually full of songs performed by the wrong artists.

To me, it sounds like an unadorned, unfinished studio demo and I'm guessing that maybe this was sent to the folks who were assembling the tribute to see what they thought, or even for the band themselves to listen back to, and they never went ahead and made a fully fleshed-out recording. Just my take. (I like it okay for what it is, and I'm glad we got to hear it, but I agree with Sal)

Actually, not bad.

There is actually a great version of this song by Cyndi Lauper from some tribute show some years back.

I feel like i can't hear it is a good description of my ambivalence to this version. Periodically I will watch a youtube video of cyndi lauper singing Carey live on some soret of joni tribute award show. Just love her performance.

Actually not a half bad attempt- sounds like a typical Becker tight guitar but Fagen...a bit fey.
Should have song it in his regular register

No. I hated the music from the beginning and didn't get more than two lines into it. A total misfire.
