Ural Thomas is 82 years old, but you'd be forgiven if your guess was about 40 years off. His voice still has the charm and emotion of a soul singer in his prime. That, along with some fantastic songs and arrangements make "Dancing Dimensions," the new album from Ural Thomas & The Pain a big time winner.
I'm always skeptical, not to mention usually disappointed by new retro soul artists. Daptone Records has given us some truly fine music over the years, but just as much of it is a lot of bells, whistles and recording gimmicks, leaving the substance of real songs on the other side of the studio door. Maybe Thomas's age and his experience sharing stages with the greats of the 60's are what gives this album the advantage.
The title track feels like a lost Shuggie Otis session, while "Promises" evokes Al Green during his big four of the 70's. One of my favorites is "Ol Safiya," which reminds me more than a bit of Leon Russell and whole lot like Dr. John.
Thomas can sing and his young band knows how to keep you interested with familiar licks and horn lines, while never sounding like a cover band. "Dancing Dimensions" is worth your time.

Nice! Reminds me of Don Bryant. Another old school soul singer (80 years young) who's last two albums, "You Make Me Feel" (2020) and "Don't Give Up On Love" (2017) are classics.

Thanks for this tip. I read about the album in MOJO but it didn't stick, partly because the band name makes this not sound nearly as fun as it is.
These songs are a lot of fun. Ol Safiya could be an outtake from Fiyo On The Bayou. Thanks for the heads-up.
