Another Lonely Night- Belton Richard
Fu Man Chu- Desmond Dekker
This one popped up on the iPod last week and I knew right then and there it would end up here. What a vibe!
Your Precious Love- Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
That 7 note guitar run, the way the chorus comes in and out of harmony, the finger snaps--they sure knew how to make records in Detroit.
Your Lips Are Red- St. Vincent
And speaking of making records, this St. Vincent track knocks me out. It's far from traditional, and might be somewhat jarring following the Motown hit. But I hear just as many hooks.
I Can't Dance With You- Small Faces
I can't recall if it was a recent Mojo or Uncut, but there was a feature about the Small Faces best tracks chosen by musicians. Jerry Shirley, drummer of Humble Pie (and many others), chose this track. I had to play it as the title didn't immediately ring a bell. Shirley says, "Steve said they released 'My Mind's Eye' as the single and then he played us the b-side. Oh wow!" Yeah, oh wow indeed! What a groove.
Dick Tracy- The Skatalites
In a recent interview with Variety, Todd Rundgren discusses his upcoming album "Space Force" and talks about his collaborations. He said Weezer's Rivers Cuomo came up with the idea of sampling The Skatalites' "Dick Tracy." So, here it is.
Down With The Ship- Todd Rundgren & Rivers Cuomo
And here IT is.
Another Lonely Night- Belton Richard
In a NYT piece on Tommy McLain and his brand new killer record "I Ran Down Every Dream," which I hope to review this week, Elvis Costello mentions the compilation "Another Saturday Night" as the place he first got into Cajun and Louisiana jukebox hits. Me too, Elvis! McLain is featured as a singer and songwriter on that LP, but I felt like sharing this one from Belton Richard.

Looks like a great mix - thank you Sal!
Well, I've got more'n half of these, being a fellow fan of bluebeat/ska/old reggae, tho my version of Another Lonely Night has Richard singing it in French (same backing track, tho). One thing we don't share is a love for Rundgren, tho I really like the one you put up in this ZIP (not particularly a fan of Cuomo, either, so doubly surprising!), so it's a keeper. Oddly, one of the other few Todds I have is his duet with Robin Holcomb on a live cover of the old folk chestnut House Carpenter. Maybe he's more my speed when he's collaborating.....
