Ringo Could Have Played This...

I love Ringo Starr. You love Ringo Starr. We all love Ringo Starr.

But, I think the five second demonstration of "Ticket To Ride" with that heavy 4/4 beat, is pretty damn hot!

Wow--five seconds on any of those songs shows the difference. Go Ringo!

It would be interesting to go back and find when the "Ringo stinks" rants began. As a musician, though not a drummer, I've always thought Ringo's drumming was absolutely fitting for each song. The more drummers I've played with, I think that Ringo was a master on the kit.

And THAT’S what makes him a STARR!

Musicians all have differing levels of technical expertise. But expertise is not what defines if a musician is great or not. It’s what they choose to play or not play. There are thousands of drummers more technically proficient than Ringo but there aren’t any who could come up with the patterns he did for The Beatles. As the video demonstrates he was inventive and never went for the stock pattern. It’s what made him a ‘Starr’.

Then there's "A Day In The Life", and really the list goes on and on. The one detail I remember from Mark Lewisohn" "Sessions" is that on hours of tapes, no take broke down because Ringo fucked up.

I saw a clip of Ringo talking about his drumming and learned that he is left-handed and was playing with a right-handed drum kit.

And that's why he's a... umm... err... GREAT drummer!

I remember hearing people say things along the lines of “Ringo was lucky, he hooked up with three geniuses and just went along for the ride”. I think this is the most reliable way to know that the person you’re talking to knows nothing about music. The Beatles would not have been the Beatles without Ringo. Period.
