Clean Money- Elvis Costello
Rainchild- Octopus
Stupid Marriage- The Specials
O My God- The Police
All Lovers Are Deranged- Pete Townshend
Time For The Sun To Rise- Earl King
Nobody Got No Bizness- New York Dolls
Clean Money- Elvis Costello
Elvis Costello's two stray track collections, "10 Bloody Marys..." (aka 'Taking Liberties" in the U.S.) and "Out Of Our Idiot" play as well, if not better than a number of proper albums in his long career. This track opens the first, and it opens this week's set.
Rainchild- Octopus
See the post from Monday, 6/12, re: Octopus.
Stupid Marriage- The Specials
The Specials take the legendary Prince Buster's "Judge Dredd" to new heights. (40 years later and I still haven't had enough of that first Specials record.)
O My God- The Police
This one popped up on the iPod shuffle last week. So many big tracks off "Synchronicity," you forget just how good the little ones are. I particularly love Stewart Copeland's stuttering fills when Sting sings "Fill it up! Fill it up!"
All Lovers Are Deranged- Pete Townshend
From "Scoop 3," my favorite of Pete's "Scoop" collections, this was commercially released by David Gilmour on his second solo album, "About Face." Good version, but I like Pete's more.
Time For The Sun To Rise- Earl King
This is one of my favorite tracks out of New Orleans. The vibe is to die for, but only on this version from 1977, which features the French Brothers, Bob and George. Earl King rerecorded this in 1990, and it just doesn't work as well.
Nobody Got No Bizness- New York Dolls
"Hi everybody. I'm David Jo of the New York Dolls. We're from New York City and we like our Philly soul, Chicago style." The reunion of The Dolls and Todd Rundgren, "'Cause I Sez So" sounded a lot better last week than it did when it was released. Give this album a new spin, if like me, you thought it was just okay in 2009.

Like a lot of NO musicians, Earl ("oil") re-recorded a ton of his songs. Sometimes for the better, ofen for the worse. But, this 77 cut is the classic!
I love "Lonely So Long" and especially "Better Than You" from that Dolls record. I find that whole 2006-2012 run from them charming.
I had completely forgotten that Dolls song. Thanks!😎
Out Of Our Idiots has always been a favorite.
I probably like Pete's 'Deranged a smidge better, but I love the power of Gilmour's.
I've got the Dolls/Todd record but I've not listened to it much - I'll do that now with your nudge - thanks!
Great mix!

Great Police track!
I've been such a Townshend/Who kick lately. And I've had this developing theory ... tell me if y'all think this is crazy. I think Pete Townshend is actually underrated by most music fans, or certainly at least most casual music fans.
By that I mean, his age-group-and-talent-level-peers - Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Keith & Mick, Dylan, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page - all seem genuinely lauded and deeply loved by a large swath of music fans. I mean, people really love them and even look up to them.
But Pete, I rarely hear discussed in the same way. He's well known of course, and loved, but not nearly on the level of some of those mentioned.
Why is that? (If you even agree with my premise) I think it's because he made his name with a band and never had huge hits on his own like either Paul. (Keith & Mick blow that part of the theory)
Is it the seething darkness Pete's always exuded?
Is it the allegations of kid porn?
I don't know. But I think Pete's actually kind of a level above ones more often mentioned - to me, he's at the head of the class for his age range in rock. He writes, he's amazing on guitar, he sings, he produces, he can engineer his own stuff - the whole deal. Only Stevie Wonder, Prince, Todd Rundgren and maybe a few others can claim to be that good at that many things in music.
OK, I've rambled on uselessly about this ... any thoughts?
Geez, that Earl King number is gorgeous. 'Vibe' indeed.

F*****g Elvis!
Nice job, nice details! The Townshend and Costello tunes are the standouts for me. Cheers!
A double Elvis helping this week. Very nice. I think one of the reasons why the first Specials album still doesn't quit is because of the production. Costello was able to catch the live feel of the Specials without any gimmicks. Just pure energy. Even on the slower numbers you can feel the sweat on the club walls.
