All right, woo! Are we gonna have a good time tonight? Yeah!
[starts singing] I was born here and I'll die here against my will I know it looks like I'm moving but I'm standing still Every nerve in my body is so vacant and numb I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from Don't even hear a murmur of a prayer It's not dark yet but it's getting there
All right!
Seriously, I love this version. We often think of Tom as the panty-catching entertainer, but he really is quite talented. As Shriner says, that voice is amazing.
I was texting some friends the other day, discussing who we wanted to see live before they're gone. Tom was on my list. His albums since the early 2000's have been interesting and challenging, certainly not a "Tom Jones Tribute Act."
I agree! Tom's done some great covers on his last few albums, I hope he's up for another LP while he still has his voice. I also hope it doesn't include something like "The Windmills of Your Mind", like his last album did. I guess he still has a little schlock left.
I was hoping it was Bob covering Tom, perhaps Talking Reality Television Blues, but this is better than I expected. Never thought that Not Dark Yet would work as an anthemic rock song, but it does. I find Tom usually overwhelms the song, but he holds back a bit here, which is a big plus.
As others have noted, Tom's voice belies his age. The same holds for Van Morrison. I saw Van and his wonderful band about 2 weeks ago and was blown away (again). This time out, he did only his new album and was in a really cheerful mood.
Todd's "interesting and challenging" comment is right on the mark. As Tom has aged, he could have played it safe like so many others have done, "catching panties" (great, Bill!), and singing just the hits, but his selection of tunes has been very surprising and quite eclectic. Reminds me of Robert Plant, kinda sorta.

Hahaha
And ... he will be 83 next week. Amazing.
Wow, this guy's still got it and his voice sounds amazing! This is STILL Tom Jones! Minus the flying panties.

Sal --
Just had to tell you -- that Los Super Seven cover of the Bobby Fuller song has changed my life. I'm putting it up next week with a big thank you.
Wow, that thing is great.
Damn. Music is magic. What other art form can grab you like this, against your will? Well done, Tom.
