"Rejuvenate? I'm In A Park & I'm Practically Dead"

Today's post title is a line uttered by Richard E. Grant as Withnail in one of the greatest films of all time "Withnail & I."

It's relevance is simple. I've got nothing. Sorry.

At the risk of turning this into an unnecessary rant, I'll just say, there is definitely something in the air, and I don't just mean Canadian wildfire smoke.

Having spoken to a few friends who are also record dealers about the abysmal state of selling records, or in our case, not selling records, as well as what seems like a universal pall over the country, something just ain't fittin', to borrow from another classic film.

Something's gotta give because there is a vibe right now that just doesn't feel too good. And I know it's not just me. I am hearing it from a lot of people.

This world needs an enormous slap in the face, STAT!

Could it be the heat?

I saw a thread on Twitter yesterday about the terrible state of Discogs. I'm not too familiar with everything that's going on, but it sounded pretty crappy.

Funny you should mention Withnail -- just saw it last week -- courtesy of TCM -- for the first time in ages, and it killed me once again.

Without question the greatest film about the end of the counterculture EVAH

"I must have you, by BURGLARY if necessary!" Probably misremembered quote from Withnail but what a funny film.

What's the other movie quote? "Something just ain't fittin'?" Tried to search for it but no luck.

"I want your finest wines brought to me here and brought to me now" - love that scene in the tea shop. Richard Grant was incredible in that movie and it's still hard to believe that in real life he's never had a drink.

I have agood friend who sells records and he's been saying that the bottom of the records market has fallen out in the last six/nine months for him. He's also in the NY area. Is this drop in sales universal or only in the New York area?

Captain Al,
Great question, and after talking to a couple of friends/dealers this morning, I may have an answer. Gotta think about it. But in short, New York stinks!

More later.

I've bought about 40 records in the last 8 weeks.

It's new to you.

I'm admittedly late to the game.

I don't know WTF is going on either, but I feel you. Don't lose hope, they always say - but who are THEY, exactly and what do they know?

Right now there seems to be an overabundance of stores and dealers in NY State. Up here in the Albany area there must be close to ten stores selling vinyl to the collectors and hardcore not counting the mall outlets. Plus about a show a month. I feel that is way too many outlets for the number of possible sales up here. I can't see how so many shops and shows can survive.

Maybe a few outlets will close and things will get better for the survivors.

Also maybe record collectors are taking a pause to listen to their most recent purchases before diving back in. As much as we might think otherwise, collecting vinyl is still a small part of music listening and thus more vulnerable to minor ups and downs of the market.

Hang in there, it will get better eventually. I think.
