Brickfield Nights- The Boys
Power pop or power punk? Whatever you call it, The Boys nail it.

Help Me, Suzanne- Rhett Miller
Whether as "The Instigator," or "The Traveler," or "The Messenger," or The Dreamer," Rhett Miller has made some great music in his lifetime, but my favorite is "The Believer." This is from that.

Lipstick Traces- The O'Jays
Allen Toussaint used to tell a story about Benny Spellman and how after Ernie K. Doe hit it big with "Mother-In-Law," Benny asked Allen why he couldn't write a hit for him. So Allen said he'd take care of it and gave him "Lipstick Traces," which is basically "Mother-In-Law" only better. Here are The O'Jays a few years before they got on the Philly love train and their version.

Unsatisfied- The Replacements
When the 'Mats were on, they were ON!

Ramshackle Day Parade- Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros
I had originally thought of posting Strummer's version of the Fats Domino tune, "Before I Grow Too Old," which Joe calls "Silver & Gold" on his record. But this track hit me harder and better.

I Want You Back- David Ruffin
I've been listening to a lot of David Ruffin, thanks to some stellar vinyl reissues of the The Temptations catalogue. This, of course, was huge for The Jackson 5, while Ruffin's version sat in the vaults for over 30 years.

Before I Grow Too Old- Fats Domino
Last word goes to the Fat Man, since I've had this track on my mind.

Have a safe and Happy 4th everybody.

That David Ruffin track, which I hadn’t heard previously, is killer. Thanks!

First heard Brickfield Nights as a BBC John Peel Show session, old Peel always championing new bands. Good to learn the track presumably made it over to the former colonies where you're celebrating today some sort of independence thingy. Have a good one. Cheers!
