In case you missed Saturday's "Song Of The Day," here it is again, along with two more from Margaret Glaspy's new record "Echo The Diamond."
Glaspy was born in Sacramento and raised in Red Bluff, California, but a number of bios state Brooklyn or "Brooklyn based," which is usually enough for me to never listen to a note of music. But a few musicians who I love and respect, have raved about this released and though it was only one pass, I loved most of it.
The barebones production and arrangements are courtesy of Glaspy's partner, guitarist Julian Lage, and it's that minimal attack on the guitars and drums that I find so appealing. Someone I know said it reminded him of Television's "Marquee Moon," and after listening, I didn't call him an idiot. I get it.
"Echo The Diamond" is loaded with hooks, and while I usually have little patience for that Alanis Morrissette flourish in a lead vocal, I think Margaret Glaspy handles it well. And her songs are better.
Check out "Echo The Diamond." I'm diggin' it.

If Brooklyn turns you off, when a bio says they are from Queens, do you jump to play it? :)
Thx for the tip
@Michael Giltz,
I'm not turned off by people from Brooklyn. I'm turned off by people who aren't from Brooklyn who say they are from Brooklyn in press releases, as if Brooklyn has a "sound" like Manchester or Memphis.
i liked it too.
I'm likin' it a lot!
The songs you put up are the ones that stand out. Downloaded the album for a buck twenty on soundike. On initial listen, I'd say I like about 60 to 70% of it. Thumbs up.

Interesting that you put Cale's "Barracuda" up as song of the day. He's been performing that live for the first time ever on his current tour, so I'm told. Fear and Paris 1919 are my faves by him. But I also love Sabotage/Live. Back to helping my son put a new AC compressor in Sandy's old car. We're in way over our heads, but fearless. Might have to call my ace-mechanic dad to fix this can of worms we opened up. But I don't want to hear his ornery ass cussing and scolding us for trying in the first place. A bottle of Chivas might bend his will and improve his mood. Anyway, here's to John Cale.

I like it! I get a Juliana Hatfield flavor. (note to self, time to play one of my favorite albums for the first time in a minute, Juliana's "Become What You Are.")
VR,
I saw Cale's setlist from Saturday night, noticed "Barracuda," kicked myself for not going to show and decided to make it the SOTD.
She's getting airplay on some local radio stations; WFUV and WXPK. I like the guitar sound but her vocals....the Alannis comparison is accurate (and I don't like Alannis)
I was just listening to this yesterday. Didn't immediately grab me, but on your say-so I will give it a few more "spins." Better Not Doubt Sal!

Dig! I couldn't explain what I liked about the sound, but you said it for me: "minimal attack on the guitars and drums". Yep!
I get the "Brooklyn based" bullshit. Whaddaya gonna do?
