Clones (We're All)- Alice Cooper
I hadn't thought about this track for years and then it popped up on the pod. It's a pretty convincing jump into the 80's from Alice, though I don't recall the rest of the album "Flush The Fashion" being as convincing.

The Lonely Bull- The Untouchables
This song was made for this band.

May My Heart Be Cast Into Stone- The Toys

Between "Lovers Concerto" and this track, The Toys really didn't need to do much more. And they didn't, though "Attack" did much better on the charts than this song. I prefer this one.

Low Down Man- Squirrel Nut Zippers

The Squirrel Nut Zippers opened for X last week. I didn't attend, but I was reminded of how much I love this song.

You've Come Back- Lesley Gore

Written by Van McCoy, this was the b side of "Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows." It's also the better of the two.

Strangers When We Meet- David Bowie

Long time David Bowie keyboardist and occasional musical director Mike Garson, recently called this "one of David's most underrated songs." It's a good one, that's for sure.

The Elephant Ride- Squeeze

This one closes out "Sweets From A Stranger" and I thought it'd be a good way to go out here.

Well ... I guess the chick vocalists highlight this batch of tunes, IMHO. I really like the Gore tune. Sounds less dated than Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows. But maybe that's because, I believe, the session for Sunshine etc. was over a year before. Van McCoy came up with another winner. Gore has a unique voice and I wonder why this song never made it onto any of the comps or anthologys I've seen. Her "Treat Me Like a Lady" was a big hit in Berdoo and almost nowhere else. I dug that and "Magic Colors," which got local airplay but never hit. I bought the single because local radio only teased as hitbound for a couple of weeks and hardly ever played it. It was worth it, as the B-Side had a pretty boss cover.

And Katharine Whalen ... yeah. Too bad she's gone from the SNZ now. But I have seen them without her and they were most delicious. They camped out in California last December and I caught 3 gigs. What a great bunch of musicians. Since I tape, I know for a fact that I have never seen them perform "Low Down Man".

But Alice Cooper? Flush the Fashion was aptly titled. "Clones"?? The guy was out of his element and out of his fucking mind on drugs and booze at that point. He couldn't even muster up a decent cover of "Talk Talk."

Thanks for the Song of the Day by Common Cold. Bill Rinehart was a real nice guy and a truly unsung talent. But "Come On" is better and deserves the plug. Once when I was surfing Secos he was out on the beach too. I said hi and he was surpised I knew who he was. He didn't remember that I met him before, which was understandable. Not a bad surfer either. My uncle got me into the Whisky when I was twelve to see Gene Clark. I had a major crush on Gene. But after seeing the Doors open, I was wanting them both. Anyway, Elmer knew my uncle from the Johnny Rivers days and we got upstairs to greet the band. Bill and Joel were the nicest. Gene was kinda busy doing something with someone discreetly. Anyway, I wish there was an entire CD's worth of the Common Cold. Has Ugly Things ever featured them? Gotta find that issue if they did. Rinehart's no longer with us, unfortunately.

Oh I'm kinda, meh, on the Bowie tune. That Gimme Some Loving bass line is recurring in there. But it's kinda boring.

VR,
You're right. "Come Down," the Common Cold a-side is the better tune, but that was already a SOTD. Thought I'd share the flip.

Yeah. I figured that. What I meant was that the record company chose the right song to put on the plug side, not for you to plug it. Just to be clear:).

Reading it again, it was clear. My bad.

Thanks for this mix!

Sal:

Ovidalo amigo. It was open to interpretation. No "my bad's" necessary.

Am currently heading for the beach before it gets too choppy. Enjoy what's left of the weekend. And thanks for being so passionate about the music. I think we all share that here.

Wow. Can't believe it's been that long. Way to hang in there and thanks for all the great music that I would have otherwise missed.
