Dodo- David Bowie & Lulu
The first time I heard Bowie sing "Dodo" was probably the first time anyone in America heard Bowie sing "Dodo." It was the "1980 Floor Show" presented on The Midnight Special in 1973. Several bootlegs and CD reissues later, and an official version finally turned up as a bonus cut on the "Diamond Dogs" release. But the original duet with Lulu remains officially unreleased.

Dream World- The Common Cold
I've shared the West Coast nugget a-side a few times before, but the b-side popped up on the pod and though not quite as wonderful as "Come Down," it's still worthy of some air time. The Common Cold, by the way, is Bill Rhinehart, formerly of The Leaves and The Merry-Go-Round.

I Don't See You Laughing Now- Marshall Crenshaw
The Crenshaw subscription E.P.s were a brilliant idea. One new original, one cover version, and one unreleased vault track on a 10" piece of wax, released every few months. There were six in all and every artist should be doing this, especially those who suffer from writer's block, like M.C. often does. This is from E.P. #1.

Thanks For Chicago, Mr. James- Scott Walker
A typically dramatic pop reading from Mr. Walker with a chorus melody to die for.

The Habit Of Lovin' You- Nino Tempo & April Stevens

See the "All Strung Out" post from earlier this week.

I Wish, I Wish- The Rails
Please enjoy the stunning harmony of Kami Thompson and James Walbourne, aka The Rails.

Things Have Changed (Live 2000)- Bob Dylan
This live version can be found on the "Tell Tale Signs" box. I think the band really cooks on this one.

One last thing for those who are still reading.

I'll make this as painless as possible.

I can't afford to keep the hosting site of all the weekend mixes and Songs Of The Week posts going anymore. Now there are plenty of sites who offer their hosting and storage services for free, but along with that free service comes more complications: time consuming downloads with passwords, limits, less space for me (and you), and more annoying pop-ups for massage therapy and Zoloft. I have listened to many of you who are still afraid to download music, or who simply can't be bothered with the inconveniences of the free sites. By paying for space, your tunes, including the CD length "Weekend Mixes" are one click away. Renewal is 10/9 and I just can't spare the cash after a terrible summer of business.

So, if you'd like to help, the donation button is on the bottom right. I completely and truly understand if you don't. Blogs should be free. But all links will then be shut down on 10/10.

Thanks for your consideration. And please forgive me for needing to ask.

Hey Sal,

Done!

If I'm going to download I better throw a few coins in the jar.

Pleased to help the wood burn.

No need to apologize. Labors of love shouldn't cost you a bundle.

The Common Cold is a truly awful name for a band.

I know The Habit Of Lovin' You is just a rewrite of All Strung Out but I like it even more. Just a terrific nugget. Thx for bringing it to light.

After all this time I never thought there'd be a Bowie track I wasn't aware of, yet here it is. Great find.

And I wasn't familiar with the Scott Walker track as I stopped at 4. What a phenomenal track. I've added "'Til the Band Comes In" to my On Deck list.

Happy to help. The Scott Walker and MC are worth a donation just by themselves...and I did get the MC EP series!

Donation button on bottom right? Uh, what's it supposed to look like? Guess I'm dumb. Please advise. I'd like to grease the wheels. Jeez, I have your page in a separate window. I thought you took the weekend off. Like a lame brain I didn't refresh the page till just now. I wanna help you continue the seance.

VR,
Right side bar, below "Now Playing," button with a heading that says "Help Is Not Mandatory."

And thank you.

Thanks so much for all you do.

Sal,

Thanks for letting me know about the right side bar. I've only been visiting this site for a short while. For some reason when I open your page it's enlarged and it cuts the right side bar off. I never even knew you had a right side bar until you told me and I shrank the page. I laid some cash on you this morning before I crashed. I was too burned out to leave you a note then. Thanks, hope you can keep it going.

Aloha

Jeezus, that Rails song is gorgeous.
I certainly have heard 'Dodo' before, but this is the version that stuck, so thanks for that, too.
Yes, Bob's band was cookin' that night.
Another fine set.
Thanks for the li'l write-ups for your shares. Music hounds always wanna know what others are listening to, and real hounds like knowing 'why'. The two break-in questions I ask new co-workers are "What's your archeology story?" (How'd you get into it, do you have a specialized focus, what have you done before I met you today) and "What music do you like?" (And don't say 'a little of everything', because that's never true; give me specific bands, genres, songs, what you have cued up now or recently [that last one is for the inevitable 'I don't know, I can't think of anything off the bat']).

You've got nothing to apologise for! Some of us just need a jab in the ribs (or elsewhere) now and then to remind us to give some support in return for the music, critique, laughs, tears and tantrums that your blog provides on a regular basis! Just back from a break in Helsinki and Oslo (great busking duo did a smashing version of Harvest Moon under a bridge in the latter) and I've got a few euros and kroner left over, converted to that greenback currency of yours and sent your way. Thanks for doing up your SOTW zip again. Cheers!
