Jamaica Pulls, Part One

So I'm digging and digging and digging in Kingston, and one out of every ten boxes (piles, stacks, shelves, whatever) I see American stuff...which is good...from a seller's POV. Found a Jamaican press of an Anita Baker album, "Rhythm Of Love." Look it up. It ain't cheap. But I also found random U.S. 45s on shelves with boxes of Jamaican dancehall and "lovers rock" 45s. Here's a box of Gregory Isaacs singles and one copy of a Jamaican press of Madonna's "This Used To Be My Playground" on Warner Brothers smack dab in the middle. This is the nature of digging, for better or worse.

That Madonna single ain't nothing...from a seller's POV. And neither is the copy I found of Cissy Houston covering "Be My Baby." But who knew? I didn't. I grabbed it because why not? 3 bucks. I wanted to hear it.

You've got to be either really brave or really stupid to cover "Be My Baby," one of the greatest records of all time. But I think Cissy nails it, big time. It doesn't feel forced, or worse, ironic. It's big and different.  It's also a bit creepy because it sounds so much like Whitney. Hope you hear what I hear.

Well heckfire, that sounds great! Like it was meant to be that way, almost. I get a Burt Bacharach vibe from it.

Sounds like a really rewarding, fun trip.

My wife and I used the original as our recessional music (though you could barely hear it because the “wedding coordinator” kept it too low, dammit) but this version might have been a better choice given the circumstances. Glad your trip is bearing fun fruit like this. Thanks for sharing!

I don't know what Whitney sounds like (yes, of course I know who she was, but I didn't follow her career), so I can't say I heard what you heard; I can say, tho, that that was a great version of BMB. "Ironic" is not a term I associate with soul music, or soul covers of pop music.
Ditto on the greatness of that cover of Hooked On A Feeling. If your upcoming shares are of the caliber of today's results of your trip, I'm eagerly awaiting each post.
