Melody- David Johansen
That Woman's Got Me Drinking- Shane MacGowan & The Popes
La Playa- Los Lobos
11th Street Overcrossing- The Rising Sons
Tomorrow Night- Bob Dylan
Something- James Booker
Young Boy Blues- Snooks Eaglin
Melody- David Johansen
A New York Doll meets a Spider From Mars in Motown? Yes. This is "Melody" by David Johansen produced by Mick Ronson.
That Woman's Got Me Drinking- Shane MacGowan & The Popes
One more for Shane!
La Playa- Los Lobos
From the great lost Los Lobos album, "This Time," a record that has been sitting in the abyss of the defunct Hollywood Records vault for years. Somebody reissue this, please.
11th Street Overcrossing- The Rising Sons
Listened to the most recent Taj & Ry record "Get On Board" last week and it made me think of the first from many years ago.
Tomorrow Night- Bob Dylan
Covered by many, but on this day, I felt like hearing Bob.
Something- James Booker
Live from Tipitina's, here is the one and only James Booker sounding like three piano players on the George Harrison classic.
Young Boy Blues- Snooks Eaglin
Snooks was always a must see in New Orleans, and on the rare occasion he made it to New York, I'd be there, too. One of the very best of his kind, an insanely good guitar player, and yet it took me over 6 months to sell his very best record, for about $15 less than what it should sell for. Something is very rotten in the state of Denmark. Listen to Snooks. He's good for ya!

OK, confession time, and let's see if any of you good folks can relate.
I'm betting that most of you are the "go to music gal or guy" in your friend group - like, you're so into music that people will say "Hey Joe - who wrote that song about trees and love from the 80s, man ??"
That's me. My friends and family think I know a lot about music, which I do. I'm always receiving trivia questions and getting tagged on music posts and such.
But I feel like I have so many gaping holes in my knowledge ... for instance, seeing another Shane McGowan song pop up here, I have to confess that I know zero about him or the Pogues or any of those offshoots. No reason why - I've just been led elsewhere.
Anybody else have that feeling, of being both a source of knowledge but also ignorant about big things within that world?
Anyways - Sal, if you were to ever brew up a Pogues/Shawn playlist here on The Burn, I'd love it. Yeah, I know I can go to Spotify and have a robot do it for me. I'm more interested in your choices or the choices of a mixmaker in this crowd.
Cheers for "melody" , I loved "In Style" when it came out, great songs and a bit of a lost gem , thanks for the memory jog
Yep I know what you’re talking about I don’t mind that I’m considered the expert in the crowd but I try to avoid it as much as possible. I just don’t want to come off as a know it all. It’s fun when the conversation moves to great questions and comments like you posted about enjoying learning more. Ahh, but there are those times when people assume I’m into the latest MOR that some people rely on for their listening. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate that some folks just don’t look at music as that important and just want a mindless sing along but it’s hard to respond to “hey have you listened to the latest Michael Bluble”😳. Or “are going to see Three Dog Night next week”.😳😂😂. Also agree with you on the Pogues and Shane. Waiting for that playlist!! Thanks Sal. Great mix
In 2010, I wrote an essay about this very thing. It is now being expanded for a future project. I was always the guy! Always! But two things happened to put an end to it.
The internet was invented.
Music changed for the worst. There I've said it. I no longer have a desire to listen to and know about everything, like I once did when the shop was open.
I am looking forward to reading that future project Sal - as I'll bet all of us are.
Spinster, I hear you - I've had awkward Michael Buble moments with friends where I realized their musical tastes were a bit more shallow than I'd thought. :)
But it is fun when people ask me music questions that even Google can't quite answer, because they involve some personal reference... "What was that song we were singing after the Steely Dan concert in '98, the song we wished they'd sung?" "Rose Darling, of course!" "THANK YOU NOEL!"
I forget many things, but I never forget a musical memory.
I still have CDs so I've got that Los Lobos album! When the internet collapses, I'll be well supplied with CDs and books and BluRays.
Hey, Michael Buble's "Home" is a great record and Cher's duet with him is fun. (They changed one word and boom! It's a Christmas song.)
Yes, Noel M. We've all got gaps. I think the more you know about a subject, the more you realize how much more you DON'T know. We'll never read all the good books, see all the movies and TV, hear all the great albums.
It's a wonderful feeling. When you're really curious, you will ALWAYS have more great music to explore. It's not about this week's flavor. It's about saying, "I need to dive deep into Louis Armstrong" (Or Ella, which I did this year, listening to 30+ albums of hers I'd never heard before). Or brushing up on the blues -- I began by checking out all the albums in the Blues Hall Of Fame. I'm still working my way through them. Or relistening to all the weird, offbeat Beach Boys albums after Pet Sounds and throughout the 70s.
Ain't it exciting? Always more mountains to climb. And anyone who's an "expert" knows how much they have to learn. So embrace it. You're well informed enough to know a lot AND know how to find out the answer and learn more. And when someone says they love Michael Buble say, Cool! Have you ever listened to Frank Sinatra's Songs For Swinging Lovers? You might like that too.
Michael Glitz, the joy music gives me, and probably many of us, only grows. Happy to be on that ride.
Future project????
Randy
A great set of tunes. The only one unfamiliar to me was the David Johansen, so I gave it a spin on You Tube. Somehow the chorus made me think of YMCA... and then several Motown tracks :-)
