Coincidentally, have been enjoying "Three Shades of Blue" by James Kaplan (thanks Bob in chat for the tip). It is very, very good. Of course, it's accompanied by repeated trips down the bop wormhole, which of course is a great pleasure as well. I listened to one of the Bird solos on the 1945 Town Hall recorded w/ Diz probably 20 times yesterday. I could play every day for the rest of my life and never touch on that genius.
One of the more interesting topics is heroin, and whether it aids a player in the short term by helping him play just behind the beat, an added touch of swing to solos. "Junkie Time" they call it. Sinatra picked it up and mastered it without touching junk, but he heard it in Billie Holiday among others. Super interesting stuff.
