My Love Explodes- The Dukes Of Stratosphear
Mr. You're A Better Man Than I- The Yardbirds
Sol Caliente- Quiet Sun
Thunderball- The Soul Brothers
Firewalker- Rickie Lee Jones
A Dream That Never Ends- Dwight Yoakam
Don't Let Them Take You Down (Beautiful Day)- The Wallflowers
A FEW NOTES:
I know this isn't a popular opinion, but I think the last seven XTC records are better than the first seven, and I am including both Dukes records in the last seven.
Been on a solo Phil Manzanera kick this last week. I still think "801 Live" is one of the greatest records of all time. Quiet Sun is damn good, too.
That new Dwight Yoakam record has at least six pop gems on it. I've included one of them here.
If you haven't listened to "Silver Patron Saints," the star-studded tribute to Jesse Malin, it's time. I have finally come around to appreciate Malin's songwriting, and if you've been on the fence like I have, this record might do it for you. This Wallfowers track is also the first of their's I've liked in ages.
Enjoy.

Mr. You're A Better Man Than I is one of my favorite tunes from The Yardbirds.
The Dukes Of Stratosphear is something I played a lot in my college days when their work first appeared, but each year I play it less. There are some great tracks, including My Love Explodes, but others are too goofy for me.
Phil Manzanera's first 5 plus Quiet Sun are in high rotation, with 801 live being the most played.
Haven't gotten around to Dwight Yoakam's new one, but I've been a fan since his first EP arrived, so I will definitely give it a go. I saw him open for Jason & The Scorchers at that time - what a smoking hot gig!

"but others are too goofy for me."
Goofier than what's on their first three?
I'm looking forward to tomorrow's Jesse Malin show
I’m not a fan of White Music. Go 2 has a similar history with me as The Dukes of Stratosphear. From Drums & Wires, XTC found their voice.

Malin is variable between albums, but "Sunset Kids" was an instant classic for me. Ironically, i don't think the guest artists perform his songs as well as he did.
just did the Dukes for my winter stay. @ home trip day mañana :)
Couldn't agree with you more about XTC. They just got better and better.
That Dwight Yoakam song is wonderful. Is the whole album that good?
It's a great record.
You are correct on XTC/Dukes. They expanded their approach, concepts and musical expression. And the first 7 were pretty darn great.
The only XTC records I don't really care for are "Go 2," and (don't yell at me) "Black Sea." I know people who think "Black Sea" is their best and I don't get it. But, yes... five of the first seven are excellent, as well. I just prefer the last seven.
Agreed on XTC. Not sure where English Settlement falls in relation to first or last 7, but if it's in the first 7 then I'd include it as an addendum. Big Express has some good tracks but I find it noisy on the whole. What an incredible catalog!
Dwight has enjoyed quite the run lately!
