Ray, Flo & Eddie

I don't recall exactly when I found out that Ray Davies produced "Turtle Soup," The Turtles last proper album, but it wasn't that long ago. I still find the hook up to be somewhat strange. Nevertheless, "Turtle Soup" is a favorite of mine, and it was while I was listening yesterday, that I began to notice similarities to Kinks classics like "Village Green" and "Arthur." I am by no means saying that "Turtle Soup" comes close to the brilliance of those records, but it's hard not to recognize the overall vibe of the record sounding more like a Ray Davies record than a Flo & Eddie record.

If you've never heard "Turtle Soup," it's worth your time.

A wonderful record.

My favorite Turtles record hands down. No "hits" on it at all, but a lot of great songs on it!

group writing credits, no writing credits for Ray. none of the hits were self penned as I recall.

"Elenore" -- a brilliant single -- was (by all accounts) written by Kaylan alone.

You're onto something. The Turtles heard Village Green and asked Ray to produce them. Ray was going through some marital woes so he flew to the US to get away and do it. I doubt they wanted that Village Green drum sound though.

The Turtles could pretty much sound like whoever they wanted to (see Battle of the Bands) Magpies at times

There was a rock magazine in the 60s that had Flo and Eddie do blind reviews of new releases. It was both comical and quite savage in their criticism.

Finally got around to listening. Pretty great record, what a surprise.

"You Don't Have to Walk In the Rain" is the greatest Turtles song that nobody remembers.

I remember it...as "Elenore." Great song, but it's just "Elenore" sideways.
