This wasn't a surprise, but it still sucks.
I don't love the New York Dolls records the way others do. But I dig them just fine. That's the thing about David Johansen. I dug everything he did, however flawed, because he always seemed to be having more fun than anyone else around him.
The Dolls, his excellent solo albums, especially the first two and those two killer live records, not to mention his absolutely hilarious live Buster Poindexter shows, and The Harry Smiths, David Johansen made a lot of people happy.

Oh boy, this does suck.
The cab driver in SCROOGED. Damn, he was funny.
Yeah had heard he was in a bad way. I was and am a huge fan so this one hurts. Saw him a bunch of times and am going to watch One Night Only tonight to be reminded.
Man, I really hate to see this - a truly talented guy.
Yeah, Steve, the cab driver was a true classic.
Those later Dolls albums had a bunch of tasty tracks on them.
Sal, great photo up top.

Not sure why this one stings...that they are all gone, I suppose. What they seemed like to young me in BRLA. Discovering the Dolls and the Ramones about the same time fucked me up for months in the best way possible. My Allman Brothers obsession put away and a whole other world possible. Props to my parents for their subscription to The Village Voice and Sunday New York Times, which arrived at a newsstand downtown on Wednesday on the train...
I loved his Mansion of Fun show on Sirius/XM Radio.

Someone mentioned the Ramones and as well as the NY Dolls (or the MC5), it sadly looks like everyone has left the building.
It would be appropriate to play one of his songs "Let the Mermaids Flirt With Me" at his memorial. RIP
