I've written before about my history with Suzanne Vega and the friendship I shared with her late brother Tim. I only mention this again because I can't just listen to Suzanne's music without thinking about those days and nights from 40 years ago. I went into the new album "Flying With Angels" with a very different agenda than most who are simply fans. It's not something I can help.
That said, I wasn't impressed with the first two singles. The title track was too reminiscent of any number of tracks from her debut, and "Chambermaid," Vega's homage to Dylan's "I Want You" rubbed me the wrong way. "I Want You" is one of my favorite Dylan songs and I would have preferred a straight cover than a "clever" rewrite. But, that is where my complaining ends.
"Flying With Angels" is a fantastic record, with Suzanne in an almost rocking mood on several tracks, not to mention a surprising turn into R&B. The arrangements on more than a few tracks jumped out at me in the best ways.
This record, Vega's first of all new material in over 12 years, could have taken a number of routes. I am very happy it wasn't just an attempt to rewrite past glories. These songs are unique, yet unequivocally Suzanne, and "Flying With Angels" is a terrific "comeback."

My review should be up next week, but yeah, it rocks. I don't think I love it, but I'm happy to have it.
I dunno -- I think that answer song to "I Want You" is kinda ballsy.
Ive been looking forward to this one. It does not disappoint. Love your story of the link with her history.
Always loved her voice - "Last Train from Mariupol" is fabulous!
I enjoyed the album on first listen. The early tracks left me nonplussed but it got stronger and stronger as it went on. I look forward to listening to it again.
