Finally, A Party Record!

Davey Lane, lead guitarist of Australian power pop legends You Am I, has just released a new solo album, "Finally, A Party Record!" And while not every song is an ideal party stomper, just about every song knocked me out for one reason or another.

Lane has worked with Todd Rundgren a number of times, both in the studio, and as his musical director and band mate when Todd tours Australia. You can hear the influence all over this record, especially on "Not Expecting To Fly," which sounds like a lost 80's Utopia track.

"He's A DJ" sticks with the You Am I formula, and a few of the ballads wouldn't feel out of place on a World Party or solo Macca record.

I think "Finally, A Party Record" is going to get better with each spin.

Check out the tracks I've selected, and then go get this baby over HERE.

Looking forward to this. I enjoyed his latest album, 'Don't Bank Your Heart On It' - haven't heard any of the ones prior to that, though. I've got a copy of You Am I's 'The Cream & The Crock', but haven't spent much time with it.

That cover reminds me of The Skyhooks "Ego Is Not A Dirty Word".

Excellent news! I love You Am I, but the last several albums (from Dilettantes onwards) have been disappointing.

BBJ - The album cover reminds me a lot more of Rod Stewart's "Atlantic Crossing," than the Skyhooks effort.

As far as Davey Lane, I think the Todd Rundgren connection may have prejudiced Sal. (smile emoji). It certainly is what led us all here. And that's a good thing.

I'm with jonder on You Am I. The first three are the best. The fourth was alright but I lost interest subsequently.

But I'll give Davey Lane's new one a shot. Especially after hearing "Over, Over & Out," which is a breathtaking tongue raper. Not to be undone by the orgasmic disco choke-off of "An Absent Lover." Ooooo Yessss. God, I'm so fucked up over you.

Sold.

I haven't heard You Am I so will check them out along with Davey Lane. I liked what you have posted. I did listen to the Someloves about a week ago.

Thanks, Sal, for the Patti Smith Group version of "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star." It was the third of a 1-2-3 punch that opened "Wave." It was also the strong set opener when I saw PSG at the Hollywood Palladium in 1979. Not a bad show, but nowhere as good as her earliest tours. After she added "Radio Ethiopia" to the set, there was that to contend with. They played all but one song from "Wave" that night and a handful of covers. 20+ song set. Like the 1978 show at the Civic, we taped the Palladium show. The sound was pretty iffy that night. I hate that when it happens and it happens all too often. In 1978 we got a better tape than on the "You Light Up My Life" bootleg. It was closer to the stage and had more bottom. But Android had already done her chopped-up version which had no respect for song order or completeness. Pretty spiffy album jacket, though.
