I've been listening to a number of your favorite records of 2025 and finding a few keepers. One record in particular has knocked me out and if I had heard it before I posted my list, it would have surely made the Top Ten. I want to thank our friend Fabio for pointing out Duwayne Burnside's "Red Rooster" as one of his favorites because this record was completely off my radar.
The entire Burnside family has been making real deal blues records for a long time now, but Duwayne, with help from producer Cody Dickinson, has outdone the relatives with a collection of songs that covers a lot of bases but never loses its authenticity. It's gritty and occasionally funky. It's sweet and it's sad, and Burnside shows he can start a fire like Jimi Hendrix as well as showing the perfect restraint like Steve Cropper. "Red Rooster" is a blast from head to tail.

My only complaint is that the CD back cover is unreadable because it was art-directed to be LP size. But seriously -- yes, a terrific record; I got a free copy from his publicist in the mail, and actually just listened to it on a whim, which is unusual for lazy old me; most of the time I can't be bothered. What a fabulous surprise...
The album is a lot of fun. His relatives Garry, Cedric, and Kent, and father R.L. are also worth checking out.
