LOOKING OUT FOR # 2
When bass player extraordinaire and all around good guy, Sal Maida is not touring the world with Cracker and the legendary Mary Weiss, he is thinking about this:
"How 'bout best sophomore records: Ballad of Todd Rundgren.. , Horizontal, Da Capo, A Quick One, Traffic, Disraeli Gears, etc. Discuss on Burning Wood?"
That was the entirety of an e-mail I received right around Christmas. So I wrote back:
"Great idea. Give me ten and I'll post it."
He said:
"Those 6 and Surrealistic Pillow, Radio City, Axis:Bold As Love, Again-Buffalo Sp. I could name more but I'll go with those. Off to L.A. to play with The Dolls and X on Sat."
Before he made it to L.A., I received this:
"Then there's Odessey and Oracle, This Year's Model, The Band, For Your Pleasure, What We Did On Our Holiday."
OK...you got it?
Here are my ten:
THE BAND- THE BAND
THE ZOMBIES- ODESSEY & ORACLE
ELVIS COSTELLO- THIS YEAR'S MODEL
LED ZEPPELIN- II
JIMI HENDRIX- AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE
FACES- LONGPLAYER
DAVID BOWIE- THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD
BEASTIE BOYS- PAUL'S BOUTIQUE
BEE GEES- HORIZONTAL
QUEEN- II
Discuss and tell me what you're thinking....about the list, not the photos.

Return to Cookie Mountain-TV on the Radio. Pretty sure this would count as their sophmore album-had some early EP releases I do not count as albums. Let me know when you do best junior albums so I came come back with the incredible Dear Science. Got that one this past Xmas and having been listening to it daily. Great stuff!
I think that it's very hard to top Odyssey and Oracle. One of the top albums of all time and most people have never heard it.
I had the chance to know and play with Sal Maida in a british invasion tribute band years ago. I also worked in a record store that he frequented all the time. A great person and bass player indeed. He had excellent musical insight and knowledge.
I agree highly with all his choices except for the Beastie Boys, who I was never into.
Great albums that everyone should own and get into.
FD13--those are MY choices, not Sal Maida's choices. And you should listen to "Paul's Boutique." Don;t be afraid, it's quite genius.
Sorry Sal, I also meant the choices he mentioned in his e-mail. Inclusively both your choices are great.
I'll check out The Beasties.
When I worked at the House Of Oldies waaay back they used to come in. I always thought they were dopey kids. Musical snob that I'll always be. Go figure!
Some of my all-time favorite seconds:
NRBQ - "Scraps"
John Prine - "Diamonds in the Rough"
Marshall Crenshaw - "Field Day"
J. Geils Band - "The Morning After"
Rickie Lee Jones - "Pirates"
Rosanne Cash - "Seven Year Ache"
Bonnie Raitt - "Give It Up"
James Hunter - "People Gonna Talk"
The Clash - "Give 'em Enough Rope"
Lucinda Williams - (self-titled)
and
The Blasters (self-titled) which although it was for a while their "debut" album, it got moved back a spot when "American Music" -- their actual first album -- was commercially released.
plus "The Band" and "This Year's Model" from your list.
Bruce Springsteen -- The Wild, The Innocent and the E-Street Shuffle.
I think it's his masterpiece, but even if it isn't, it's light years better than his debut....
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
All the good choices I had are taken so all I'm left with are Pink-M!zzundaztood
Paul Young-The Secret of Association
Cheap Trick-In Color
The Eagles' Desperado ......never able to raise to that very high standard again, however....
trying not to repeat others that i agree with i would add Jeff Beck Beck-Ola, Flying Burrito Brothers Burrito Deluxe, Gram Parsons Grevious Angel, Procol Harum Shine On Brightly, Rolling Stones 12x5, Little Feat Sailing Shoes, can you consider Fleetwood Mac Rumours a second album ?, Johnny Winter Second Winter, Steely Dan Countdown To Ecstasy, Graham Parker Heat Treatment, Van Morisson Astral Weeks (I think you could consider that Van's second), Elton John Elton John (again I think that's his second,Ry Cooder Into the Purple Vally, Eric Clapton Layla, Neil Young Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Taj Mahal The Natch'l Blues,Otis Redding The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads (I'll leave the soul list to little stevie F) and the list could go on and on....I guess not every second album is the sophomore jinx. Oh and Sal Maida is a great sophomore effort (second time career as a rock n rolla)my hero
Yes to most of these, especially Springsteen's Wild, Innocent, which really was a quantum leap forward and of course Beastie Boys Paul's Boutique. My additions: Prefab Sprout's Steve McQueen aka Two Wheels Good, which is pure pop perfection. And Richard and Linda Thompson's I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight, assuming it's their second after Henry The Human Fly. How about Peter Gabriel's 'Peter Gabriel?' Not quite as good as 'Peter Gabriel,' but better, I think, than 'Peter Gabriel' though neither can match, of course, 'Peter Gabriel.'
you know how much i love elvis costello & beastie boys.
i'd also add pixies doolittle.
How come no one commented on the photos? That foppy little made-up boy wearing the cross bears some discussion
Show your face, Anon.
After reviewing all the posts on this subject, it is clear my selection of The Eagles " Desperado " is the definitive winner....
Is there a prize Sal ?
How bout a Pale Ale, on tap, in a frosted glass ?
