"Better Late Than Never" : THE WEEKEND MIX

Tracks 1-5 of this "Weekend Mix" just came together, thanks once again to a shitty commute and the often brilliant iPod shuffle. I liked the way it sounded.

The rest is the rest.

I found a link to some "alternate tracks" about a year ago. Most were just your basic tracks with the vocal channel cut out. Still, I loved it, especially hearing the B.J. Thomas track as an instrumental. It's really a beautiful arrangement with some wonderful playing. I think it will surprise you.

The XTC track is a leftover from the "Wasp Star" sessions.

The Hall & Oates track features the great Toots Thielemans, and should change the minds of any pain in the ass detractors who will go to the grave citing "Maneater" as a reason to not like Daryl & John.

Thanks to Steve for pointing out Sloan's killer version of Macca's "Waterfalls."

Oh, and that's Robert Wyatt singing lead on the Manzanera track.

DIG IT!!!

Well done Sal,

When I first saw the troubles I worried that Bobby Goldsboro, or Marty Robbins or maybe even Alain Toussaint were after you. Glad it was only the gremlins at Google / Blogger.

I love the Hall & Oates and glad to see you embrase Sloan.

Have a great weekend.

Looking forward to this one. BTW, I think "Maneater" is unjustly maligned. Are the lyrics misogynistic? Yes. Is the video cheesy? Just about ALL of the 80's H2O videos were cheesy. That said, T-Bone's Motownesque bass-line is great and it has a fine sax solo to boot. I've always liked the song and enjoy it to this day.

Thanx Sal, I forgot about "August Day" by H&O. I liked that song when it came out and forgot about it all these years.
Thank you for reminding me!

Have a nice weekend!

Sal, anybody not thinking Hall & Oates have a boatload of great songs should NOT be reading this fine blog... no excuses needed! And may I put a bug in your ear to perhaps do another mix of "Live From Daryl's House" stuff sometime? Thanks!

p.s. thanks a lot for the XTC outtake here, that is awesome and I love the album it got cut from. Love your blog

Thanks so much for this one Sal. It may be my favorite BW mix yet. Bad Girl and August Day alone was enough to put a smile on my face for the rest of the day.

Looking forward to listening to this, Sal. I'm sampling the Everly Brothers song now, thinking it might have been the Creedence number. Obviously, I got that wrong!

The guy in the photo looks like Clemenza from The Godfather.
