JD McPherson, And One More "Must Have" Of The Week

First I'd like to thank Jeff K. He asked if I knew who JD McPherson was. I said, "No, who is he?" He told me he had tickets for Nick Lowe and JD was the opener. Wanted to know if he should skip the opener. He did some research. Decided he should not skip the opener. Again. Thanks, Jeff.

you're most welcome (although how come no similar post on Pokey LaFarge)? McPherson's opener for Lowe was a solo show. The guy can play and sing; his songs are great but didn't quite translate without the band. For Lowe's encore though, he brought McPherson out (the two obviously got a kick out of each other) and they duetted on two songs, one of them being Bread's "Everything I Own." Lowe also didn't have his backing band, but the two of them did a kind of ska version of the song that stripped away the soupy arrangement and had half the audience singing along in delight.

Here's the other thing about McPherson: he's a country boy from Oklahoma, but he also has a masters degree from an art school, and at one point in the show he started talking about Roland Barthes and Duchamp. I bet he even knows something about the Hiss case.

Very nice! Channeling early retro rock, soul and r&b. He sounds a bit like a tame Little Richard. The band's sound is right on the mark. Thank you Sal and Jeff K, I'm enjoying this, a welcomed musical change.

Good find! This should do quite nicely until the next James Hunter record. Thanks Jeff and Sal.

reminds me of Big Sandy...

He sounds like a more subdued Nick Curran (which isn't really that hard to do-and not meant as a slight).
