The Ox Mix

I don't know if I trust any comments left on You Tube. Most seem to border on the psychotic. But as I was looking for footage of The Who from 12/31/68, I stumbled upon this. Within seconds, you will notice that it is a kuh-RAZEE mix, like John Entwistle broke into the studio one night after a few pints, got hold of the mixing board and said "Oh yeah, Pete? I'm too loud, you say? Well, how's this?!"

One comment references a single from which this mix originated. I have said single and while it's sounds pretty damn Ox-heavy, it's nothing like this video. It could have been doctored by the uploader. I like it, whatever it is.

Weird and strange mix. Somehow too much bass doesn't fit the song though. Sounds almost like a different tune. Good find and post, but I kind of like it the regular way.

Yeah, I don't know if it's better. It almost sounds fake. But something about it jumped out at me. The "regular way" is about as good as it gets.

Pete Townshend famously said that it's a shame all the LP (and I assume CD) versions are im stereo rather than the mono single mix because "the mono makes the stereo sound like The Carpenters."

It's authentic. John overdubbed a louder bass line for their appearance on BBC Top Gear. It's turned up on a couple of official Who CDs, including "Singles" and the bonus disc for "BBC Sessions".

Thanks Wardo.

And THANKS Charlie.

I've been on an over-the-top Who kick lately, just cannot get enough, so this is cool.

Yah, the mix does seem insanely Ox-heavy though... weighs down a song that can really take off.

Not sure about this, but it is interesting to hear. What would a top 10 of the Ox look like. I may have to ponder that awhile before I try that. Really enjoy your blog. Having had a stint working in the vinyl store long ago I really understand some of your comments. Keep up the excellent work.
