Best Record Ever...This Week

Over the years, "The Larry Williams Show" has passed through my grubby little hands dozens of times, mostly CD copies, but even once or twice on vinyl.  I never bothered to play it, mostly being turned off by the title. The word "show" led me to believe this was another unlistenable "live" performance from the 60s where the audience was louder than the band, or worse, canned.

Boy, was I wrong.

Thanks to a mention on yesterday's post, I decided to hunt this down, motivated by Steve S. and his comment, "I was just listening to the Larry Williams Show LP this morning. They do a kickass version of "For Your Love" on there."

You are correct, Steve. But I'd like to amend your comment. They do a kickass EVERYTHING on here.

Recorded on Williams' return trip to the U.K. backed by British beat band The Stormsville Shakers and featuring one Johnny "Guitar" Watson, the long out of print "The Larry Williams Show" is an insane display of rock, rhythm and blues. It is indeed a "show," but that is deceiving, since there is nothing indicating that this was recorded live.

Here it is.

This is relentless rock and roll. Enter at your own risk. You just might dance yourself hurt.

Thanks so much, Sal. My experience was identical; owned it but never listened. I'll make up for lost time thanks to you. Good wishes,

Is this the inspiration for the Jam's cover of "Slow Down" on their first lp?

You need to check out JGW's "Space Guitar" then. It's just insane!

Jimmy Page even stole a lick from it.
