THE WEEKEND MIX

It took place in Barbican Hall, London, 5/28/12.

Mitch Easter, Jody Stephens, Chris Stamey, Ken Stringfellow, Charles Cleaver and special guests that included Mike Mills of R.E.M., Jon Auer of The Posies, Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub, Robyn Hitchcock, Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo and Sondre Lerche among others, paid tribute to Big Star and their third LP, "Third-Sister Lovers."

Many of you asked for this, so here it is.

On paper, this is genius. But I am not in love with this performance. There is something about a lot of it that just doesn't click. Don't get me wrong. There are moments, so I don't want to scare you off. But I never got Robyn Hitchcock. Some of you might remember that from a previous post. Plus, full disclosure, I don't think Teenage Fanclub is the best thing since spray cheese. (I can hear the collective gasp through my ISP.) What can I say? Oh! I know! I like Yo La Tengo even less.

Enjoy, regardless of my introduction.

Looking forward to hearing this. I do happen to think Teenage Fanclub is among the best things out there -- at least everything from "Songs From Northern Britain" onwards (I could care less about their first few albums which were the really popular ones) -- so it'll be interesting to hear.

Thanks again and let the weekend begin!

I expect most of the comments today to not be about the show posted, but about TF and all that I am missing.

Hey, thanks for this Sal. Be interesting to hear the whole thing. I know that I'm in the minority who thinks that the 3rd B.Star disc was diminishing musicality, but again, opinions are opinions. Glad to see some of the early (better) songs in there. And yes, the music super-fans may violently disagree with you about Teenage Fanclub...I happen to think that they are tremendously talented. But others may want to wear your intestines as a bandolier! ;)

Robyn Hitchcock: most of records are decidedly mixed bags. His real charm was in the live shows and the stream-of-consciousness banter in between songs. The Demme movie did not capture this at all.
Yo La Tengo - completely agree. I only love them for their cover of Oklahoma USA.
Teenage Fanclub - one great record (Bandwagonesque), several very very good. One of the loudest bands I have ever heard. My left ear still bleeds every now and again from a show on Landsdowne St in 1991.

Thanks, Sal!
Disclaimers considered, I'm still eager to hear this. Similarly meh about Teenage Fanclub, altho people I respect like them.
Yo La Tengo's popularity seems out of all proportion to their talent, altho, as Ken indicates, they can be a good cover band.
There's a good local musician, who had a solid regional musical career in the 70s/80s, who now is a Robyn Hitchcock tribute act. Other than "My Wife and My Dead Wife," "Listening to the Higsons," and a couple others, I'm not getting it.

Only a handful of songs in and kinda loving this (and I'm not even a particular Big Star fan).

Thanks, Sal!

I'm not sure I have time for this. I was not impressed by "The Letter" a couple days ago, and these things are usually mostly lame.
Teenage Fanclub did a terrific version of Phil Ochs "Chords Of Fame" on "Thirteen".
I can't get into Yo La Tengo, but I don't hate them.
I liked Robyn Hitchcock in The Soft Boys, and some of his solo work, but I can imagine not "getting" him, especially if you're a Rush fan.

The Rush jokes are getting stale, Buzz.

Sorry, Sal, That's the last one unless it's a post about Rush, and the comment relevant.

Have you considered changing the name of this blog to "...but I don't get it" ?
Or "The best thing since spray cheese." ?

Teenage Fanclub is one of those bands that I just missed out on. Went right by me. So no opinion at all.

Thanks for the concert!
