Richie Havens, 1/21/41 - 4/22/13

This was my favorite moment of that very special night.

I have a wonderful memory of my clock radio waking me up on a school morning with Pete Fornatele playing "She's Leaving Home." Blew me away.

Such a great interpreter. Check out his version of 10cc's "I'm Not In Love" and from only 2 or 3 years ago, his "Won't Get Fooled Again." Brilliant.

A sad day.  A great, great loss.

Unfortunately, we've seen the passing of some really great musicians in recent months, but this one stings the most for me. He seemed like a genuinely nice person, too.

RIP

"Forty years after it was released, I still listen to "Mixed Bag" regularly. I just have never grown tired of it. Whenever I compile a list of my top twenty albums, it always makes the cut easily.

I am crushed at Richie's passing. I've had the chance to see and meet him; a gentle, wonderful man. He even signed a reprint Woodstock poster that I hang in my classroom. His music has moved me more than I can reflect upon. A sad day, indeed. Cue up "Follow" or "Wonder Child" and see...

the intro by G E Smith motivated me to look for my favorite song by him on the tube, Nuns with Guns

steves, for some reason this one really hit me too. (Paul too) For some reason, Alvin Lee of Woodstock fame didn't faze me at all when he passed; but this Woodstock icon does.

So glad I got to see him in concert once; in the rain at Jazz Fest in N'Awlins, 3 years ago.

I was AT that show!! I remember it like it was yesterday. And I listened to his version of this on constant repeat for a month.

That's cool, Chris! I was hoping Richie would play "Handouts In The Rain" that day (my fave song that he wrote - and with the rain falling) but no dice. Still, a great show.

I believe I discovered Richie Havens during this show, and it was not so interesting until he came on stage, and then it became pure magic. God bless you Richie !!!
