"73 Years Young!" : THE WEEKEND MIX

It's a rare occasion when I devote the WM to one artist, but I've been on an Ian/Mott tear this week and I decided to let it roll into the weekend. I stayed away from the obvious, for the most part, and I tried to cover all periods of Hunter's career from his Mott debut to his most recent release.

If you're a fan, you should be familiar with most if not all of this. Casual fans, maybe not. Everyone else should dig in and get started from the inside out.

These are all personal faves.

Been an Ian Hunter and Mott The Hoople fan for over 40 years, this stuff still sounds great! Thanks.

As a not quite fanatical fan, this seems like a great mix. There are a few I don't recognize (although I bet I have heard most of those at least once but just don't recall 'em) and some "classics".

He really is a great one. Without acting out some dramatic public persona he really comes across as a personal, sincere artist.

But also I would add, and this is NOT a contradiction, a master craftsman.

Great.

I have been a fan since Mott The Hoople days. Thanks for this mix Sal. Hunter is one of the greats and should be better known than he is. However his lack of widespread adulation most likely has worked to his benefit as he has the freedom to do what he wants.

What No The Journey?

Check the old place Sal for something you may not have.

No "Lisa Likes Rock N Roll"?

I might have gone with "Weary Anger" in place of "You Did Me In" ... essentially the same song, only WA is a version without Queen's backing vocals. Much like a more bare track of Springsteen's "New York City Serenade" I found floating around sans backing vocals and strings, less feels like more to me on these tracks.

I was convinced "I Need Your Love" was going to be a hit single when I first heard it ... not sure why it never quite made it out of heavy AOR rotation into the Top 40.

@William Repsher

Huge Queen fan that I am, it's their backing vocals that make that song for me.

The great thing about Ian Hunter is you could have five or six mixes this size with essentially no duplication - he's that good. Thanks for the post!

Sal, thanks so much for this weekend gift! Love love love Ian Hunter and Mott (as you know) and even though I have most of these, there are some new versions here and it looks like a great mix! Thank you!

I just kinda scanned it. I didn't listen to anything in it's entirety, but I was most impressed by the songs I didn't know, which are all the ones that aren't Mott or Hunter-Ronson. And thankfully there's only one ballad, which I generally dislike.

Sal, you can't omit "When I President"!

Bastard. That's not meant as a comment on anyone's parentage or general demeanour, but it is one of Mr Hunter's tunes which never fails to get me toe-tapping. On the whole a vg selection. Cheers!

Ian Hunter/Mott The Hoople absolutely fantastic.

His genius has always been his simplicity, Saturday Gigs, Irene Wilde lyrically simple but deeply moving
