"Boss Covers": THE WEEKEND MIX

I admit this is a bit of a mess. It was an afterthought once my first idea for the Weekend Mix fell through. It's not a bad afterthought, really. It just could have been executed a tad better.

That live cover of Sting's "I Hung My Head" needed to be part of a mix, and with the comments the other day about Bruce making so many covers his own, I...well...you get the picture.

The sound fluctuates, raging from good audience recordings to great soundboards and a little bit of everything else in between. It's mostly a volume thing.

Since many of the Boss's covers are played as encores, you will hear things like, "This is the last one of the night" more than twice.

The sequencing is odd in that a song will end and Bruce will intro the next song which won't come. So, "Ladies & Gentlemen, Billy Joel" never happens and his story about meeting Ron Kovic precedes a song recorded 5 years before meeting Ron Kovic.

Finally, I apologize for including the Apollo Medley from the Apollo Theatre. I remember enjoying immensely when I first heard it, especially Bruce's introduction.  This time around, while listening to the test run, it seems like a major speed bump. Maybe you will feel differently.

That said...this mix is still a blast if you crank it up. I'm sure most of this is old news to the diehards, but at least it's all in one spot, even if it isn't definitive.

"Angel Eyes" from the Frank Sinatra birthday tribute is a highlight, as is "Rag Mama Rag."

"Dirty Water" is only a teaser and "Tell Me Why" is a sloppy joy that I witnessed personally in Atlantic City. It also contains some of Max's worst drumming.

Enjoy?

Sal, you're just an archival anarchist - but thank you and don't change. But still, no room for Boom Boom?

Would have been without the ferkakta Apollo Medley.

Good idea! Thanks from a non-diehard (I think I've only seen him twice).

Awesome! With an addition of "Dream Baby Dream", I made it a bit more awesom-er. (My personal taste and nothing against the original selection).

Hello all...no, please remain seated...

Very cool sounding mix. Will download this evening. Hey, I once heard that Bruce did Street Fighting Man once in concert. Anyone ever hear it? In my imagination, it works well.

A touch of the spooky coincidences here or is it the ying and the yang thing (no it isn't - ed). Talking with a diehard Bruuuuce fan this a.m. who was relating how many times particular songs had been played in concert, including "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" (once apparently) which is missing from this mix! Anyway, many thanks for this & I'll burn an extra copy for the guy. Cheers!

Wonderful Friday!

I expect I wasn't the only one who this week played "I Hung My Head" and then got thinking of other covers ... dug out "Jersey Girl" ... tried to find a YouTube version of "And Then She Kissed Me" I really liked (still looking) ... remembered that Tracks box set ...

Come on ... I know you guys did it too!

A nice cap to a week of me humming "Jersey Girl" much to the chagrin of everyone else in my life!

Thanks Sal.

Angel Eyes was a highlight of that Sinatra tribute. Of the rock stars, Dylan did an original; U2 did a new song that Bono was trying to get Frank to record. Only Bruce was willing to work on Frank's own turf. Pulled it off nicely.

Thanks for sharing: I never thought I'd be able to hear this again.

Nice mix, Sal. Kind of agree with you on the Apollo Medley. This got me to thinking about other great covers Bruce has done. Some of my favorites include rock classics like I Fought the Law, You Can't Sit Down, and Little Latin Lupe Lu. Boom Boom was mentioned and that's a good one. Also worth checking out (at least once) is his cover of ZZ Top's 'I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide' from the Full Spectrum in 84. Fun stuff. Have a great weekend.

Great idea. I'm a fool for covers. And Bruce ripping into "I Hung My Head" got me thinking about his prowess in that area too. Love it.
