The Reverend

Found this one on a U.K. compilation of Hi Records oddities. Never heard it before, as it was sitting on the b-side of "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" all these years.

Heavy rotation the last 36 hours.

It's also on a comp called "Love Ritual" that includes another gem -- the Rev's cover of "I Want To Hold Your Hand."

Definitely one of the last breathing soul men. Why this wasn't a hit, I'll never know.

Some artists have better stuff on their b sides than others ever come up with!

I pulled an acoustic version of a more recent track called "Rainin' in My Heart" from a DVD that's absolutely phenomenal. Haven't tried youtubing it, but wouldn't be surprised if it was on there. I'd love for him to do an acoustic album, and I mean just voice and guitar of all his hits. Soul music really works when it's stripped down like that ... at least the good stuff!

I have a memory of some scenes in Robert Mugge's doc "The Gospel According To Al Green" where Al is just sitting in his church with an electric guitar going over some hits and it's the best thing in a pretty great film.

Good gracious, that song is a BEAST! Just amazing.

You ever seen Al actually preaching in his church in Memphis? I took a road trip there around 2000 or so and saw him; in my top 5 music experiences ever.
