Jim Lauderdale's Black Roses...

...wherein an unsung Nashville singer-songwriter with two dozen records and thousands of guest spots under his belt, teams up with legendary Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter and the North Mississippi All-Stars and releases the best Van Morrison record of the last 20 years.

Ride On

Clocks

But it's not all about that. There's some crunchy country blues on here, as well.

No Later Than Soon

As a matter of fact, the whole record is a killer.

By far the best of the three -- yes, count 'em, three -- albums Lauderdale released in 2013. Thanks for highlighting it.

Thanks for the heads up. Missed it when it came out, but I'll be listening to it soon.

Listened to some clips from his previous collaboration with Hunter. It also sounds good, but definitely more of a bluegrass album.

I like it but frankly not hearing the Van Morrison comparison.

Jim came out and played Throw My Bucket Down with The NMA at Live on The Green Oct. 2012 here in Nashville. I've been waiting for it since then. If I didn't read you, I'd be waiting for who knows how long. Many thanks!

Wow Kevin M, all I hear is Van on those first two songs I posted and a few others. The voice and phrasing is identical ...to my ears.

Good music, terrible cover. I listened in spite of the Van Morrison comparison, and for the first lines of "Ride On" I didn't hear it, but then suddenly with the horns, there's Van's phrasing from, say, "His Band and Street Choir". I don't know how you could miss it.
I was reminded that there are about three Van albums I used to really like.
