This Just In...

While my hopes weren't very high for this new Pink Floyd record "The Endless River," I am a fan of the band and was curious. And speaking of rivers, my hopes were a bit higher for "Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes," new music written to old Dylan lyrics by Elvis Costello, members of Dawes, Mumford & Sons, and others.

I've only been out of my coma for a few minutes now, but I did have enough energy to peel myself off of the floor and throw on Rockpile's "Seconds Of Pleasure" to help get the blood flowing once again.

Do not listen to these records while operating heavy machinery, driving an automobile, or wearing a shirt that is not drool-resistent.

Carry on.

I fully expect to be lulled by the Floyd. I wasn't very curious about the T-Bone Basement thing, even less so once six CDs of the real deal were announced and now available.

Waters-less Floyd -- not interested...

You mean The Endless Drivel?
Yeah, you're not that interested because it's just not Pink Floyd, any more than a McCartney/Ringo album with some Dead Beatle George slide guitar licks, playing vaguely Beatlesque tracks made from old Red Rose Speedway demos would be a Beatles album, or a satisfying listen, or , frankly, anything at all.
I'm a HUGE Floyd fan, love Gilmour's voice and guitar, but Floyd was never just a vibe, there were always ideas, a spark of some form of genius, either under Syd, or Roger, but always including the spark of musical invention from the band as well, and here, there is nothing but the evocation of the vibe of what we once remembered as Pink Floyd, an impression of an old memory.
And the one actual song? Sounds like what it is, a leftover from the limp Division Bell.
Roger said it best, speaking about Momentary Lapse, Dave's first attempt to impersonate the world's biggest band that most people didn't know the members' faces well enough to recognize. He called it, with his inimitable precision; " A clever, but quite facile forgery"
And having Dave's ridiculous wife Polly Samson write the lyrics for this and the previous record just weighed down the songs with ponderous, pedestrian lyrics WEAKLY stretching for and feigning profundity, never getting close.
That's just my opinion, but I'm completely right :-)

Thanks - your review provided the best laugh of the day. "Endless" just about sums up the "new" PF release, although "soporific", "somniferous" & "lethargic" would also work. And yes, of course, I'm going to get it & listen to it!

As I listen to the new Floyd, I can't help but think I'm missing a rather tedious movie...

Well - in a way I think Waters-less Floyd is better than Gilmour-less Floyd. I mean, even for Waters big zillions-making Wall tour, I just couldn't go, mostly b/c I want to hear Gilmour's guitar on those songs, not anyone else's.

But yeah, I'm sure this "new" Floyd is sleepy.

So - what do you think of "Lost On The River"? Would love a full review. I went all in, as I always do for Dylan things, and paid freakin' $148 for the deluxe box of the Basement Tapes 6-CD edition. I can't help it, and can't wait to open it and start hearing the music.
