The Weekend Mix, 12/19/14

A bit of a whirlwind week here, but I did find time to take a relaxing train ride to south Jersey and the iPod paid in spades, suprising me with a few gems I hadn't heard in a while.

When I got to south Jersey, my cousin and I had a discussion about Eric Clapton, the ups and downs, the good and bad. I recalled seeing him live in 2004 and thinking, "This was so fantastic, I can almost forget just how many terrible records he's released." One particular high was his version of "I Shot The Sheriff." It's here, but it is an audience recording. Totally worth the ear-adjustment.

Enjoy the rest.

Nice-looking mix, Sal. I'm a Clapton fan - I certainly don't think he's God, but I like a lot of his older songs. Especially the slower ones (like "Better Make It Through Today") and, a bit amazingly, I actually like his cod-reggae songs from the 70s like "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and such. Looking forward to hearing this version of "Sheriff."

Thanks for the mix, Sal. Hadn't heard the Chuck Berry song before - fantastic! Randy

I last saw Eric (are we on first name terms? - Ed) play live in 1996 when I believe there was still a fire in his performances & soloing in crowd pleasers like "Sheriff", "Wonderful" and even "Layla". Recorded output agreed as a tad dodgy. Speaking of names, always liked seeing the Kinks main man's full moniker on labels as in your pic to this post. Many thanks for another good head scratching mix & may you get the weekend you want. Cheers!

Thanks, Sal. Just listened, and there are a couple of people here I don't know well & now need to check out.

Off topic, but perhaps amusing to some: Vox.com has a list of celebrities who appeared on stage at the Colbert Report finale last night, and at the end of the list one finds this:

Correction: The original version of this post misidentified Barry Manilow as Rod Stewart. We deeply regret the error.

Happy Holidays...
