A guilty pleasure is something one enjoys and considers pleasurable despite feeling guilt for enjoying it.
I have never felt guilt about loving the music I love. I hold my head high when listening to great pop singles from Abba and Bon Jovi or great rock albums from Kiss, bands that are often slammed. But boy, do I feel guilty about loving this?

I love this song and don't consider it a guilty pleasure at all!
After I got over the mono mix of "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" I went back to The Alabama Shakes and have now played it over 10x and think it's a really good record.
judging from past posts, right in your wheel house. BUT, it is a live performance. we've discussed this before, haven't we?
reminds me of a friend who hated anything hyped. years after the fact, he heard the Police's "Born in the 50's" at a party and said, "Wow this is good, who is it?" It took a few seconds before anyone had the heart to tell him.
You know Capt. Al, that's what I've been thinking all along. But the grimacing and posing and Sebastian Cabot on bass should not detract from what is a truly in-the-pocket performance. That rhythm section is insanely good.
Never really got them and the only thing this track did was to make me realize that the rhythm section is killer, beard or not. I think they try too hard to establish their "grits and gravy" cred. I never feel that Ms. Howard is singing her blues but the blues of what she perceives they should be?
Something else I took from the video that does not come across on the records. She is a tasty guitar player. Nothing flashy, but really gets a sound and feel. I have not gone back to the records...yet...but I am not expecting anything like this performance.
So I will keep an open mind about them. It wouldn't be the first time it took a while to come around on a musical act. Heck it took me eight year to stop hating and come to love The Grateful Dead.
This one hooked me on the 6th listen. That is actually a good sign. The song Sal posted from their first one seemed thin. They could well be a band to watch.
How taken was I by the live performance? I bought the vinyl. Just finished sitting in front of my stereo. Scouts honor. Listened to the whole thing. After the first 4 songs, I was bored to tears. The last 6-7 songs are nothing but a bad vibe. Exacty what I felt before the live performance sucked me in. They could end up being a singles band with a great live act, but this record, again, left me cold. NO songs!
I really liked their first album, but Sal, I tend to agree with you on this one. I really like about 50% of the songs but the rest sounds like they smoked too many "jazz cigarettes" in the studio.
I'll be seeing them at Forest Hills in Sept (w/ the Drive by Truckers!) and I'm hoping that they will blow me away as a live act.
I get the "like" part, but not the "guilty pleasure" part. It's just a cool song! And of course, "Hold On" from the first LP is even better.... a theme song for me.

Well you wouldn't, Kevin M. You haven't spent the last year trashing their records on your blog.

That's pretty terrific...

I think The Alabama Shakes try too hard, it doesn't come naturally.

Love this song as well. Didn't care much for their first attempt but this song made my ears perk up.
Sebastian Cabot is a very underrated bass player.

I think she and the band are for real, and that the kool-aid tastes pretty good. This live performance is what the album sounds like to me.

This one is going on my summer mix. I did not care for them before this album, but I like this one.
"Mulder. I want to believe!"

AWITW--guilty because I spent the last two years blasting this band. But not feeling so guilty now after spinning the new record again.
