In Defense Of Michael Bolton
HAHAHAHAHAHA! GOTCHA! WOOOO! PHEW!
I kill me. Ok. Ok. No, but seriously, here is the great Tim Christensen, who you all might remember from back a few years when I posted his brilliant recreation of McCartney's "Ram" with Mike Viola, Tracy Bonham and his band The Damn Crystals. This is his take on a Bolton classic. (Bolton classic?)
I'm not big on "ironic" covers and that's why I love this. It feels dead on sincere. I'm big on sincere.

Yes, you Got Me! I froze when I read the name who shall not be named....then I froze with delight at this version. To descibe it as moving would be an understatement. Tim is a class act all the way. Love this guy!
A lot of how ballads are perceived is pure image, smoke and mirrors. If you strip the songs down to their basics with guitar or piano and voice, it's just a song. There's not a lot of difference between say "Home Sweet Home" by Motley Crue, or "Tryin' to Get the Feeling Again" by Barry Manilow, or "Oklahoma USA" by The Kinks. Well, that song has better lyrics, but a lot of it is just songwriting basics, sometimes done very well(regardless of the recording interest and his/her fan base) and sometimes not. There's that famous clip of Patti Smith doing "You Light Up My Life" on a 70's kids show. She wasn't kidding! And she sounded terrible doing a song like that.
Apparently, John Lennon really liked tracks like "Reminiscing" by Little River Band and "Telephone Line" by ELO. Go figure!

Sorry I know this won't win me any friends here, but hearing this, I'm reminded of the scene in "Animal House" where Belushi grabs the "my songs are my children" guy's guitar and smashes it.

Tim Christensen can do no wrong in my book, but like McCartney, about 1/4 of his stuff tends toward the syrupy. Not surprised he covered something like this. But then again, he does it really well.
I confess I'm not sure I've ever heard Michael Bolton. Certainly not this song.
Apologies to all of you but I may be missing something.
I will heard this again when I am in a better mood, I guess...
