10 Albums

Recently I was nominated to participate in a FaceBook Game:

"10 all-time favorite albums that really made an impact and are still on your rotation list, even if only now and then. Post the cover (no need to explain) and nominate a person to do the same."

The Beatles, Stones, Who, Bowie, and the usual suspects didn't make the cut. They haven't been in regular "rotation" in years. I've played them to death.

Of course it's a ridiculous exercise. I chose the following, posted one per day in this order:

Tied for 10th
Runner's Up

I nominate you to list yours in comments.

Have Fun!
-BBJ

(Shriner digs out his "other 100" list and focuses it for "impact" and in no random order except the first album listed and leaving out The Beatles...)

1) The Knack -- "Get The Knack" (Is Sal surprised? No!)
2) Alice Cooper -- "Goes To Hell"
3) KISS -- "Destroyer"
4) Kate Bush -- "The Dreaming"
5) Fountains of Wayne -- "Utopia Parkway"
6) The Pipettes -- "We Are The Pipettes"
7) Sufjan Stevens -- "Come on Feel The Illinoise"
8) The Monkees -- Headquarters
9) Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack (the original one)
10) Devo -- "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo"

Most of these "impact" albums came between 76-82 (the "hey, what is this thing called "music" and why do I love it so much?" years) with the exception of the FOW album (which made me realize excellent Power Pop still existed in the 90s and beyond until I stumbled across a copy of the "Shake Some Action" book), The Pipettes album which I think is the most fun album of the last 20 years and I try to turn people on to it every chance I get and Sufjan Stevens which is the last album I can remember bringing actual tears to my eyes the first time I played it. Many of these influenced my guitar playing and, of course, The Monkees album made me want to be in a band -- any band!

These are not necessarily my *favorite* albums (though many are), but probably the ones that made the most *impact* on me for a variety of reasons and the ones I still spin at least once a year if not more. Didn't make the cut: "A Young Person's Guide to King Crimson", "Electric Version" (mentioned above) and "Live Rust" -- all three of those made an impact, but I have to cut to 10, so...

Interesting; so far Lloyd Cole has shown up 3x on this list (so far). To my recollection, he is someone who's never been really discussed on this board. Time for an evaluation?

Rock/Soft Rock (in no particular order, except for "Parachute"), excluding the Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan & Jimi Hendrix. These are records that remind me of the best of the 1960s/70s and reinvent themselves every time I listen. I could not confine myself to ten choices. Sorry for the surplus of excellence.

Parachute - Pretty Things
Kenshyam - Bonzo Dog Band
Pandemonium Shadow Show - Nilsson
If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears - The Mamas and the Papas
Something Else - The Kinks
Little Games - The Yardbirds

Insight Out - The Association
Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful - Lovin' Spoonful

This was exactly my thoughts when my brother nominated my wife. I'm not on it myself but with the backing of the missus we decided to try and sound as pompous as possible, just for a laugh, I'm sure you'll understand. Though I do love all the albums we posted.
We started with :
The World Of Twist: Quality Street.
Ulrich Schnauss: Far Away Trains Passing By.
Dr Phibes & The House Of Wax Equations: Whirlpool.
Undisputed Truth: Cosmic Truth (best cover of a Neil Young song, apologies to St Etienne).
Stephane Grapelli: Young Django.
Spiritualized: Laser Guided Melodies.
Cradle: Baba Yaga.
Simon & Garfunkel: Bridge Over Troubled Water (wife chose this, totally agreed with her).
Kraftwerk: Man Machine.
Antartica: 81:03.
