Good morning friends.
Last week, I saw Mott The Hoople. This week, I saw Todd Rundgren play two nights in a row, Tuesday and last night. Tomorrow night, I will be seeing Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets. I haven't been out this much since 1985, and quite frankly, just typing this up was an effort. I am, in a word, really friggin' beat.
I am taking the rest of the week off. It will help get the creative juices flowing again and a chance to begin working from my new computer, which I expect to have this weekend.
Enjoy the next few days. Thanks for the break.
See you on Monday.

OK, but don't use a headline like that again. I thought you were quitting your blog in disgust, and I was not happy about it!

Glad you are getting out and seeing shows by artists you love. Wife and I saw Marc Broussard last night and it was terrific. Can't beat live music!
I blew off the Todd double and saw Nick Lowe/Los Straightjackets instead. Fantastic show but did I make the right call?
Noam,
Funny, I blew off the Nick/Straitjackets for all of these. Right call? You can't go wrong with Nick Lowe/Los Straitjackets. But I will say this--I've seen Todd more than anyone. Somewhere close to triple digits. And there have been some horrible nights. He seems to be inspired. Maybe his mortality is sinking in, but gone are the half-assed versions of hits, lame covers, and Vegas schtick. Check out the set lists. The hits were done in earnest. Good arrangements. Deep cuts. "Fair Warning!!" Some of the best shows I have ever seen.
Looks like basically the same setlist both nights??! Really?
First set is identical every night. It's the narrative for the book. Second set is completely different every night. 20 different songs in two nights at Town Hall and a killer opening set.
How was Mott?
we are counting on reports from your Jurassic week of shows.
Yeah! I saw Todd both nights in Atlanta last week and damn, still reeling.
My main takeaways:
- You just can't ask for better setlists. I mean - so many hits in the first set (including my single favorite song ever, I Saw The Light) mixed in with some crazy-deep cuts. Then totally different second sets each night. The first night in ATL we got Want Of A Nail and Just One Victory in the second set; second night we got Born To Synthesize (mostly a cappella) and Drive. Damn, yeah.
- Who even does 2 sets anymore? I actually thought the first set was going to be the whole show, that first night, and would have been basically OK with that.
- He does a Q&A with the crowd (pre-recorded questions) to start the second set, which was fun.
- To me, these shows are more about Todd probably setting us up for the next left-field meander. So if these are your preferred Todd setlists, eat it up whilst you can! (I am surely the only one commenting here who actually loved the shows a few years ago that were all dance stuff - with 2 female dancers and a DJ. But I certainly loved these Individualist shows too - super memorable and satisfying.)
Todd's wearing a Todd t-shirt?
What an awesome week
