"10 bertles../"

I send e-mails to myself anytime I get an idea for a post. Some of the time, I'll wake up and not understand what I wrote in the e-mail. One such e-mail had a subject line that read, "BW Post." That much I got. The body of the e-mail read, "10 bertles../"

Scrolling through various social media feeds, I saw a friend post his 10 Favorite Beatles songs, explaining, "This may seem like another boring list until you realize just how difficult it is to only choose ten."

That MUST be what I had written to myself.

So since I am Weekend Mix poor for this Friday, I decided to give this a shot, and as an extra added challenge, I put them in ascending order instead of taking the lazy, alphabetical way out.

I'm not completely sure I am satisfied with this, but I am completely sure I didn't want to think too hard on it. That said, this may be real.

10. Don't Let Me Down
 9.  I'm Only Sleeping
 8.  I Don't Want To Spoil The Party
 7.  No Reply
 6.  Penny Lane
 5.  If I Fell
 4.  Something
 3.  Rain
 2.  For No One
 1.  And Your Bird Can Sing

Have a great weekend and if you are in the path of the heat wave that is about to smother the east coast like a warm wet tweed suit, send in your Ten favorite Beatles songs before you pass out.
;)

You Know My Name is not in my top ten but it has a special place in my heart. I was drinking with a buddy in a bar just below Manhattan College and watching the Vietnam draft lottery. My number was low enough that I was gone after college. The draft ended the year that I graduated from college. Playing that song repeatedly that night in the bar jukebox (b side to Let It Be) drove the patrons crazy but it made sense in my head at that time.
Top ten
10. Rain

8. Help
7. This Boy (influenced by my wife)
6. We Can Work it Out

Harder than you think. I went through the albums and jotted down 16. I got it to 9, but picking the 10th out of those last 7 was hard. And I will admit to being biased as most of these songs I like playing "live"

In no particular order:

Something
Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight
I’ll Be Back
Hey Bulldog
She Said She Said
I’m Looking Through You
She’s Leaving Home
I’ve Just Seen A Face
In My Life
Martha My Dear -- the remaster of the White Album has forever changed how I look at this song. It's now top-10 Beatles.

(and it killed me to leave off "Twist and Shout", but I went with original material at the end.)

I can't do a list for the Beatles, it's too hard. My favorite record of theirs (not the best my favorite) is "And I Love Her". I married that record long ago, as a mere tyke, and that's that. Loving the lists here from the braver, more discriminating souls than me. Thank you.

Have a great weekend, stay cool!

3 of 4 covers on Beatles For Sale

I can't list my ten favorite Beatles ALBUMS, much less songs! (Ok, I can actually.)

But songs? Please! No! Don't make me! No one put "My Bonnie"?

"Help" by Tina Turner may be my favorite Beatles cover. Can we do covers? That would be easier. No?

FOR NO ONE -- my single favorite Beatles record of all

These should be chronological but I got ahead of myself

1. SHE LOVES YOU -- epic, rousing, irresistible
2. DRIVE MY CAR -- beep beep beep beep yeah!
3. A HARD DAY'S NIGHT -- anyone who doesn't include it is lying; that chord! That film!
4. I'VE JUST SEEN A FACE -- it's in my key! very easy for me to sing, esp if I turn the record way up and can't hear myself
5. LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS and...
6. I AM THE WALRUS -- two songs with John absolutely wigging out and having a laugh to boot.
7. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE -- deeply moving in its simplicity a la Imagine and their most radical record if you take it to heart -- plus they delivered on a world stage with a live simulcast and the Rolling Stones at their feet! I might have cried when it happened or imagined people all over would be changed by it. TRULY. I heard it in the car recently and imagining them introducing this to the universe via TV and everyone hearing it for the first time all together, literally everyone a la Live Aid and the like but it was just the Beatles, well struck an emotional chord w me to an embarrassing level.
8. CRY BABY CRY -- my friend Chris played it live on college radio w just an acoustic guitar and i can't help just digging it to death ever since
9. HERE COMES THE SUN -- "All You Need is Love" will be the first song played at my memorial. This one will be the last as thousands of my admirers stream out into a late morning sun, tears in their eyes as they think of me.
10. TWO OF US -- John and Paul had it, right from the start. Such an effortless charmer and exactly what the album Let It Be wanted to be.
