Do To Me- Trombone Shorty & Jeff Beck
My friend Allen Vella co-hosts a New Orleans music radio show on WIOX in the Catskills. It airs on Friday afternoons at 4PM. Last week he played this Trombone Shorty track and it sounded so good, I had to play it for you.

Stormy- The Supremes
A deep cover from Miss Ross, Miss Ballard and Miss Wilson. Pretty sure the monsoon last week made me think of it.

A Sign From Me To You- Colin Blunstone
So many records go in and out of my hands over the course of a week. Sometimes it's a perk and other times an occupational hazard, like when I reached for Colin Blunstone's "Ennismore" and it wasn't there. I remedied the situation right away. Here's a track from that gorgeous album, which often gets overshadowed by his stunning debut.

Cha Dooky Doo- Art Neville
This one's for Art.

Our Prayer- The Beach Boys
Took a four hour, round trip train ride this week, and the trusty ol' iPod impressed me with a random four song stretch that blew my mind. It began with this track from The Beach Boys and segued into...

Qualify & Satisfy- Funkadelic
Roxy Music's "Mother Of Pearl" and "So Sad" by The Everlys completed the quartet. Check it out for yourselves. You'll be amazed at how well those four songs work together.  Apologies for only getting you started.

All The Love Of The Universe- Santana
I want to thank my friend Kevin M. for pointing out just how wonderful the new Santana album is. I've been on a Santana binge for a few weeks and "Caravanserai" is one that I know everybody loves, but somehow slipped by me all these years. Everyone is right. What an album! This tune, especially.

Cha Dooky Do ! Yeah! This takes me back to freshman year of college, in '86, when that first compilation of Neville Bros came out. I got it at Ruthless Records and played it out... including this song.

I feel so lucky to have seen Aaron, Cyrill and Ian Neville at this year's Jazz Fest.

Rest in peace, Art.

Doing a weekly catch-up of the blog. Great stuff & a great SOTW zip, especially old Blunstone. Many thanks!

I love how "Caravanserai" straddles eras of Santana - the earthiness of the old with Gregg Rolie, but embracing the open-endedness of the jazzy stuff to come. It would be a while before Santana would get that right again ("Welcome" and "Borboletta" are kind of lightweight in comparison).
