Deep Cut Six Pack Volume Thirteen: Foreigner

Show of hands, who is not reading this right now because you saw the name Foreigner in the title?

This one is a hard sell, but I stand by it.

Though I do love "Cold As Ice," "Feels Like The First Time," "Double Vision," "Urgent," "Long Long Way From Home" and yes, even "Waiting For A Girl Like You"---I mean, what's not to love about great rock tunes, played and sung well?--- this is more about the deeper cuts. Let's face it, love or hate "Hot Blooded" and "I Want To Know What Love Is," you can't deny that Lou Gramm has one of the best rock voices in music. And if you are instinctively repelled by popular music and classic rock, it's understandable how you would not be inclined to visit the albums that contain the songs you no longer wish to hear.

But I do think, like many artists---Cheap Trick and Queen, come to mind---the hits don't usually represent the best of the lot, at least not "Hot Blooded" and "I Want To Know What Love Is" in Foreigner's case.

Anyway, that's my pitch. You can stop rolling your eyes now.

A tip o'the hat to cmealha for commenting on the Foreigner song in last week's "D" mix and inspiring me to create this six pack, which is actually a seven pack. I've included "Do What You Like" as a bonus, for those who missed it on Friday.

Perfect timing for me, having just read, and genuinely enjoyed, the Mick Jones memoir. How about a pre-Foreinger collection of his work?

I really like the first 5 Foreigner albums, and know nothing of them after that. Some really good deep cuts here, especially Luanne and I'll Get Even with You. I would add my favorites, I Need You (first album) and Woman in Black (4). Nice post today!

"Fool For You Anyway". I forgot how much I love that song. Thanks!

Happily hold my hand up to being a fan, especially of the first LPs. Vividly recall dropping the needle on that first album in '77, being propelled across the room, hair standing on end, flared jeans, er, flaring, terrifying next door's cat, as "Feels Like the First Time" (and it was) soared out if the speakers. Listen to the production on that, we'd shout. A classic rock band with a classic vocalist. Nice package, thanks!

Nice mix. Jukebox Hero has aged quite well IMO

I for one, welcome this. I'm in agreement that Lou Gramm has an exceptional voice and great phrasing.

Great stuff! Lou Gramm had a great rock voice, plus I'll stand for Midnight Blue as a top 10 1980's pop song.

I for one am curious, as I offered Fool For You Anyway in an earlier comment as a great Foreigner song...even as I noted my dislike for Lou Gramm's voice. I'd encourage any and all to cue up on YouTube the collab Average White Band and Ben E. King did on FFYA; it's a stone-cold Philly-sounding classic.

I'm not much of a fan, but Star Rider is a great tune

Always liked Foreigner. Nice Deep Cuts. I also like a cut from 1987's Inside Information called Counting Every Minute.
