A report from Brooklyn Vegan says the Sneakers Pimps have announced their first album in 20 years.
I also have an announcement. My friend Frankie Malandrine just ordered new chairs for the Sheepshead Bay Knights Of Columbus game room and snack area.
In other news...
I've been thinking a lot about Neil Young after last week's math.
"On The Beach' is Neil Young's secret weapon.
We rely on "After The Gold Rush" and "Harvest." We swoon over later masterpieces like "Harvest Moon" and...uh...hmmm..."Harvest Moon." We shake our heads at "Reactor" and "Greendale."
"Hey, I like Greendale."
Yeah, yeah, I know. You like "Greendale." Settle down, this is my post.
But "On The Beach" just exists, quietly. It's there when you need it and it never lets you down.
Top 5 Neil...no doubt.
Also...
I don't know if just sampling a random five minutes of the new Floating Points/Pharoah Sanders album will do it any justice, but it's a truly stunning piece of work. I got lost in its beauty and I suggest dedicating a little under an hour to it, when you can simply sit and listen to it.
And finally....
We lost a true master, the one and only Roger Hawkins, original Swamper and Muscle Shoals Drummer.
You probably own more records featuring Hawkins backbeat than you realize.
An incredibly short list of songs he's played on:
When A Man Loves A Woman
Mustang Sally
Tell Mama
Respect
Chain Of Fools
I'll Take You There
I'LL TAKE YOU THERE!!!
Kodachrome
Old Time Rock & Roll
You get the picture.
Rest In Peace, Hawk.

Hal Blaine, Tony Allen, and now Roger Hawkins. Seems like every year now we lose another giant behind the kit.
Humans no drum machine tech can touch.
R.I.P. (Remember inspired percussion)
Very excited about the chairs at the KOC! Please let us know about the story as it develops. We are so tired of hearing about how the current chairs have been chafing Phil from Coyle Street's rump. He bitches about the napkins at Roll-n-Roaster every time we talk.Well done Frankie!
My first exposure to Roger Hawkins was the inside gatefold cover of Boz Scaggs’ debut album in 1969. Photos of all the musicians at Muscle Shoals (and background singers too!) were presented and I couldn’t get enough of this Southern funk coming out of this fantastic group. It was “Loan Me A Dime” that I first heard on the radio and the groove was so laid-back and fat that when the feel changes and the massive horns kick in, I was freaking out big time and loving every second. Thank you Roger, for driving that swinging session directly into my brain and leaving (to this day) a huge grin on my face. The man was indeed a giant!
I favor Zuma over On the Beach, but also see them as fraternal twins. my 5 would be: s/t, Everyone Knows This is Nowhere, Rust Never Sleeps, Zuma, Tonight's the Night. I've let go the big ones.
Thanks for the Floating Points/Pharoah Sanders news. Didn't know about it and loved what I heard. Just ordered a copy. I think "On The Beach" might just be my favorite Neil Young album. There's something about it that never gets tiresome. And speaking of young, Happy Birthday Bob Dylan. 80 Years Strong!
As a huge Neil fan, On the Beach is my most played Neil album. I had it as a teenager in the 70's; I just love it. I dig the new Pharoah Sanders/Floating Points record
So glad for the shout-out on the Pharoah Sanders/Floating Points record. Blew me away and sure to be on my best of the year list. Neil Young's On The Beach is overwhelmingly good, it was Greendale before Greendale was (un)cool. It's hard to pick a top 5 Neil Young...from the 1970s! What a decade. But yes, On The Beach is always on there.
re: Roger Hawkins not to mention Low Spark of High Heeled Boys and an actual tour with Traffic with Free post Kosoff and John Martyn opeining. Saw it at Nassau Coliseum. February '73
