Bonzo Goes To Birmingham

I'm sure I have talked about this song a number of times before, whether featured as a Song Of The Day or as part of a mix. But it's been stuck in my head for a few days now, so I thought I'd try to smack it out by giving it a page to itself.

From the brilliant mind of a madman genius from Birmingham England, this is 1979's "Keep Your Hands On The Wheel," Roy Wood's homage to 60's summer singles. The melody is infectious and his lead vocal is a thing of beauty.

I should also point out, though it should be quite obvious from the immediate sound of the drums, that John Bonham is handling duties on the kit. It's genius--the Beach Boys meet Led Zeppelin, which actually, is what The Move can sound like occasionally, if you pick the right songs.

Enjoy one of my favorite singles of all time. This is the album version with the inevitable, Roy Wood, Irish jig interlude. The single edit works better, but the quality on this YouTube video is much better.

It's amazing how Bonzo can dominate a song without overwhelming it.

I never knew there was a single edit.

Nice post!

That was a perfect description of that song, Sal. I don't think I've ever heard that before. Very catchy, love the chorus and the vocals (lead & backup). And the drumming is terrific. Thanks for sharing.

I can't believe I never heard this. I see it's on one of his later albums. I am all in on Roy Wood plus Wizzard. Ballpark Incident and See My Baby Jive are all time winners. Just love what Roy Wood throws in a song. Off to hear ELO 1st album which I have not heard in eons.

Love this cut. I like. most of the album as well. Was this recorded before or after that recently unearthed Beware My Love with Bonham? Bonzo as a session drummer is a wild concept

What a great song to conclude my wild day. Thank you very much, Sal.

I haven't played that album in a long time. I pulled it out and sure enough, Bonzo has a credit. He must have played on a few of Roy's other recordings because I've heard that drum style before. Another good one from Roy.

As the saying goes, I did not know that. Bonham on the drum kit, I mean. Or if I did know, then I'd forgotten. Whatever, it's still a fine chunk of Wood/Move. Cheers!

I've been having fun, Sal.
BW is my first stop every morning and often the last one at night, to read all the comments. And boy, do you get comments! (And nearly all positive). There are some fine blogs out there that get about 3 comments a week ... it must be heartbreaking.
So hang in there, Sal, re-charge your batteries ... we'll be here as always.

Someone takes this internet thing serious enough to throw a fit or something? I thought we were just sharing great sounds and ideas about what makes music fun. I am the naïve, I guess.

I'm not sure where exactly the "back" of the internet would be....but

lemme tell ya, you have one fine blog and we fans of yours got your back.

I'm just getting back from a "disconnected" few days, so I don't know what

this was about, but whoever's causing you grief.......dang, I promised my

wife I'd cut down on swearing....but you know what I mean! Enjoy your time away...

but not too long, please!

Without exactly knowing what happened, I was thinking the other day, what if someone like Gino Vanelli (ridiculed in this space but an accomplished musician without doubt) comes up with a statement like: Van’s last record is so subpar or I don’t care about new music, or I haven’t heard any Stones record since... The guy would need to have a pair of titanium balls to be ready for the answers. All this to say that I enjoy better when the posts are constructive, which are the vast majority. Hang on and will love to see you back soon.

Sal,

In case we don't from you soon...

I came of age (high school & college) in the '70s and '80s in Detroit, a town with a half-way decent music scene. But I've spent the past 30 years as a school teacher in a small town in Oregon. A different planet.

I just wanted to let you know that your blog is one of the things that has helped me maintain my sanity the past few years. Thank you.

Even though I don’t comment often I very much look forward to reading your blog. Don’t let let the bastards get you down. It’s your blog and if they don’t like it they can fuck right off. Hope you come back soon. I wish you the best.
