When he was peforming in the theatre lobby prior to the One Mo Time shows, I'd go see him 2 -3 times a week, Often, I'd be the only person paying attention. As revered as he is posthumously, he was never appreciated in the US during his life. Europe loved him, though. For a great view of his life, look up the documentary that Lily Keber did about him, Bayou Maharajah.
@pmac, I've followed the progress of Lily's movie since she first showed it as a 15 minute short at One Eyed Jacks during the Ponderosa Stomp, right until it premiered in NYC at Lincoln Center. Absolutely essential.
Even JF disses the poor guy. While one of the archival photos of the event is Booker on stage at the piano, he's yet to have a commerative poster. Makes you wonder if Quint Davis had a "beef" with him, like Davis had with K-Doe.
James's singing may not have always been his strongest point but this so damn soulful (maybe a sense of him having listened carefully to Aretha when he worked with her)
