I took a walk around the neighborhood on Saturday and heard a song coming out of some guy's car, as he was fiddling with something under his hood. I knew what it was but I couldn't place it.
The Whispers? Tavares? No! Shuggie Otis!

Then, while scrolling through one of Brooklyn Vegan's email blasts, the word "vintage" followed by "R&B" jumped out at me. Could it be Silk Sonic? Yes. It could.
"Skate" is the brand new second single from Anderson.Paak and Bruno Mars doing business as Silk Sonic and it's a good one. The first single "Leave The Door Open" got by me, and it too, has a classic summer soul sound, though I think "Skate" is the better of the two.
A full length debut, "An Evening With Silk Sonic" is planned, but a release date is TBA. Until then, check out the two singles.

"Skate" could be placed in "Summer of Soul" and not look out of place. (that's a compliment)

Yeah! I like Silk Sonic so far.
I think they're both terrific singles. Bruno Mars has the skill to deliver a great album, more than just some great singles. Here's hoping Silk Sonic will be the album on which he fulfills that promise.
The videos are a hoot, too. For all of the success he's had, Bruno Mars is an underrated artist.
